Truck Is Lock In 4 Wheel Drive Cant Get It Out The Dummy Lite That Tell You Your In 4wheel Drive Is Off But It Is Still In Any Help Or Suggestions Would Be Greatly Appreciated
Sounds like your auto hubs are stuck. Too bad you dont have manual hubs cuz with routine maintnance it wouldnt happen. Anyway since you do (or im assuming you do) have auto hubs you could try pressing the button to engage it and disengage it a couple of times and it may disengage if not let me know.
Sometimes with some light, slow driving they'll come out of 4. My dads truck does it every one in a while from not using it too often which doesnt allow for proper lubrication.
take em off and throw them away, get a set of aftermarket manuals and live with having to lock them when you want to use 4x4( not the best idea but if you are going to be using the 4x4 on an off in a day then leave em locked until you know you arent going to need it). The manuals are stronger, and wont leave you on stuck somewhere when they decide to do the opposite of stay stuck and not engage, which is common(usually wont notice that until you are stuck).
Its pretty straight forward I dont think you'd have much trouble just requires some basic knowledge. You can probably find a guide somewhere online or maybe someone here knows of one or has written one themselves, I wish you good luck and dont get discouraged we're just a few clicks away!
To pull the hubs off, remove the six cover bolts. There are two snap rings inside the hub that need to be removed. You do not have to disassmeble the entire hub to remove it. The one snap ring is quite easy with a set of snap ring pliers, cheap ones work just fine. This one is locacted on the end of the axle shaft and is the first one visible. The other one is a bit of a pain. The best think that works is a set of right anle picks, and this snap ring is just a wire that runs the circumfrence of the hub with a small break in it. To get it out, find the end of it and use the right angle pick to pull it out of its groove. Once one end is out the rest comes out fairly easily. To get the whole hub assembly out after you have done this can be fun. Use the bolts that hold the cover on and thread them a fair ways into the hub. Use a pry bar and pry on the head from directly across the hub to pull it out. It will take some prying from a couple of spots to get it out, but once it starts to move you should be able to just pull it out with your fingers. Install is just as easy, and most aftermarket hubs worth buying, like warn and milemarker, have the same style to them.
I havent heard to many instances where the switch fails, but the shift motors due tend to fail. Have some one use the switch will you are under the truck(take neccesary precautions as to not get run over, like blocking the wheels when truck is in neutral) and listen for the whine of the electric motor, if the motor is making noise then it is turning. To check the switch, get yourself a wiring diagram for the switch and find out which wires are supposed to have power at certain times and check with either a voltmeter or a test light. After that I am out of ideas. I do not have much expirience with the electric system, as I prefer the manual for dependability reasons. If you plan on taking your truck off road or want some more dependable hubs, and the budget allows, still replace the auto locking hubs because if they are not the problem now, its just a matter of time.
Is it in 4 wheeel or are the hubs just locked up? But when changing the hubs from autos to manuals the bearing lock nuts need to be changed as the manuals are different thickness than the autos atleast for warn and I believe mile markers. It is a conversion kit sold seperatly from the hubs. I shifted my 92 F150 out of 4 wheel drive once when going too fast and the thing got stuck in 4 wheel drive. I had to go forward and backwards a few times and the thing shifted out but my light was on. I am thinking if the light is off then it is just the hubs stuck. You can take the shift motor off and shift the transfer case with a pair of plyers to check it out also. Good luck and hope this helps.
ps also my shift motor on my 92 stopped working and just took the motor off and cleaned up the armature and put it back together and it worked just fine and is still working 2 yrs later.
