a. Just don't use 4X
b. Spend a lot of money to convert it to 2X and your name will not be the only forever around. You will have that Bronco forever unless you sell it for scrap.
c. Don't own a Bronco so someone else can cherish what it can do.
4X4 is desirable and nice to have unless you live on the coast and never go to the beach. I always take the Bronco on trips. We went to South Texas in Jan and headed home in 85 degrees. Most of the state iced over before I got home. The body style and weight will not give great mileage so why not have something you can use when you need it?
Given enough time, money, and effort, anything can be done. But in this case, I would look into some other options before proceeding.
If she likes the body style, why not find a 4x2 F150 and put a topper over the bed? Ford made extended cab versions of the F150, so you might look into that if a rear seat is a priority, or you might even look into an F250 CrewCab. And let's not forget that Ford made (still makes) a very fine van.
But in my opinion, converting a Bronco to a 4x2 is not worth the time, money, or effort it would take to get it accomplished. My Bronco is in 2 Hi 95% of the time, but I would'nt dream of it being without 4WD capability. You know the old saying: "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."
Just my opinion.

Farmforward said it well. In any case, just take out the front drive shaft if you really want to do it, but since that equivalent to keeping it in 2WD, I just don't see the point.
PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!! the 78-79 bronco is to sought after to do this injustice to it! sell it so someone else can enjoy it + buy you'r wife a mini van! beside's the wheel base is diff .
I myself would never do this either, but- as much stuff is available for the late 70's trucks, and as plentiful as these are, I cant see this being too awfully difficult of an undertaking. I wonder if you guys missed the point. I dont think she liked the way it drove. There is so much aftermarket stuff available, you could make it drive like a lincoln. I love my full size 4x's, I have 3! I also like the bodies of these trucks. So if I wanted to build my own "lincoln", I could. Just leaving the truck in 2wd doesn't chage how it handles. Replacing the front end suspension will. Again- I don't like that, but I have to say I was actually thinking about it the other day. Just my .02
Its his truck , if its sell the bronco 4x4 or covert to 2x4 I'd do the swap .The man's wife want a lower ride ( my wife is 4 ft 8 so I can relate) I drive my truck till all they are good for is parts .As for resale who cares this comes up every time . And the 2x4 blazers and ram chargers are starting to to fetch some $$ around here. Bronco look great 2x4 and its still the same bronco . No different than a city Bronco thats never been in 4x4 ( it may as well be a 2x4 ) . Neighbor has a Bronco Is bone stock except 2x4 and people check it out every where he goes. And at Major parts o rama show he was offered $$ Just sitting out in parking lot. Have fun its your ride.
i gotta say when your right your right! it is his to do as he wishes! so be it!, you could shorten the trucks frame to fit, or swap out the front steering gear from truck to bronco ,holes are probaly all there. any thing can be done ,ya just gotta do it! and i'm sorry i just really love the 78 - 79 bronco ! but now that i really think about it ,it would look cool set down low on air ride suspention! and nice tire's + rims, but not to low
These are very common rigs where I come from .If its him buying one and keeping it in tip top shapein 2x4 or a kid buying it and trashing it on4x4 weekend so what . Hes not cutting up body just frame and those are a dime a dozen neighbor has 6 with good frames sinking in mud.
I use my '95 bronco in the sand mostly. In the last 3 years i have prob been in the sand about 40-50 weekends. Dunes. I used four wheel drive once. I was pulling a chevy suburban out of the sand. Other than that, i never use four wheel drive. I just air down my 35" mudders and i play it smart in my head. Im considering converting to 2 wheel drive and making it a race bronco. Just put the beams from the truck on there and get a custom drive shaft, find a tail shaft for tranny. steering should bolt up. spindles and rotors will be changed. Should be able to use same calipers.
