I am ready to put a patch panel in the floor of my 51 ford F6. After I have it in place I would like to coat the bottom of the cab. I was planning on using some sort of bed liner material. I also though about por15. What do you recomend? I want it to protect it from deteriorating any further.
ZeroRust is also very good stuff. It is less expensive and less messy. You can get it in cans (for brushing or thinned for spraying) and you can get it in rattle can spray. I have used both and get mine from a local body shop supply.
I plan on also using Herculiner bed liner over the bottom of the cab floor, inside the fenders and under the running boards. It is rubberized and provides some extra protection against stone dings, etc and some decent sound deadening.
I used POR-15 to coat the top and bottom side of my cab floor in my F-4. It dries rock hard. I tried to scratch it off just to see how tough it was and it wouldn't move. It was messy to apply, even if you use gloves. I wouldn't coat it with a bed liner unless it's solid rust free metal. The bed liner is not going to hold any better over rust than paint, moisture will be able to get under and the rust will spread. A rust in encapsulator like POR-15 is the best.
There has been quite a few discussion on the different brands of rust encapsulators on this board. There are brands the others on this board like better than POR-15 for many different reasons. The next time I use one I am going to try some other than POR-15 because you can't paint directly over POR-15, you have to use more of there relatively expensive products to make paint bond to their encapsulator. Most of the other brands you can paint directly over without additional prep. If you can't search this site go to Google and search "rust encapsulator" and enter "www.ford-trucks.com" in the domain box. You will get many links to these the discussions on this board.
I've use krylon Hammer paint; but I guess its all about the level of rust were talking about, I did my interior floor and it is very tough and comes is a variety of colors. Also in spray cans or quart's. Can be found at wallyworld and home improvement stores.
Its a paint over rust. I did alot of sanding and wire wheel drilling prior to my application.
I am going to purchase a small sandblaster today from Harbor tool. I want to get the bottom of the cab prior to applying a coating. I have to finish a few projects at work today before I can leave, then its off to Harbor tool.
KEVIN--ANY of these por 15 type products work well. Some even use rustoleum for heavy rust -it is red oxide and works well, and is much cheaper and if you are undecided on how much money to spend it is a cheap alternative.I have used them all and when it comes down to it I still like epoxies, but then again ,they are costly.I am the type of guy that will paint my trucks many times over the years, but that's my thing.I love to paint and I remain undecided sometimes of what I will do next, but all these primers, etc will do the job.Just do not get it on you!!!!!!!!
Walford's56 whe in come time for my final paint, I will call you in for some help. I am going to have to find a good place to paint it, my garage has too much dust and dirt flying around. I hope to have the new floor panel in on Saturday. I will then decide what to use. Thanks for all the help.
Kevin
After using it on my garage floor, I'd consider using Rexthane. It is a one part brush on moisture cured urethane industrial coating. It can be used on concrete, wood or metal and sticks like nothing else and is very tough. It is recommended for use in coating the inside of steel water tanks, so I don't think rust thru would be a problem.
