I am putting together a streetrod version of my '50 F-1, and would like to get the battery out of the engine compartment. Where is the best place to put it? I have seen drop-down boxes that attach to the frame somewhere, but cannot seem to find one. Any ideas?
The 53-56 F-series used a frame mounted battery box. It had a cover on the floor of the cab. I saw a battery box and a cover on Ebay not too long ago. They were under 2 different auctions with no takers. You should be able to get one from the repo dealers, like LMC or Dennis Carpenter, Mac's. There's a few more suppliers that escape my mind, but they're out there.
On my 56, I welded shut the battery cover in the floor and mounted a 2000 Econoline auxiliary battey box and cover. It bolts to the frame about the middle of the running board. Four bolt attachment. Three of them are sliders so when you loosen three and remove one bolt, the box swings down on cables. It is powder coated and has heavy plastic cover with places for the cables to enter the box. I have about $120 in it. If you are interested in the part numbers, I can access them Tuesday 1/22. Sorry no pictures.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jan-02 AT 01:54 AM (EST)]Yeah, I have seen them available from various catalog vintage parts places. I just checked my Sacramento Vintage Ford catalog, just because it was closest, and they carry them for "'53-'56 plus others" as they put it. Their part number for it is 7224, and it uses a group 24 battery. Their website is www.vintage-ford.com or their toll free number is 1-888-FORD-100
The blurb doesn't say much about it, just shows a pic, and says "battery tray unlocks and slides down for service. Frame mounting plate measures 6" x 14", rear of box is 8 1/2 x 11 1/2". Maybe this one will work for you. I have seen them from other suppliers available in stainless steel for that "show" look, if I remember who, I will post it on here too. Oh, this Co's price for the one I described previously is $110 (ouch!).
Ouch is right. I looked up a few suppliers and was not at all impressed with the prices. Will dig into the steel pile and make my own. A little more h#####le to do, but don't have to explain the credit card statement.
