Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck for 29 years in a row now. Here are some numbers.
Ford has been selling 900,000+ F-150's per year since the 2004 redesign.
Chevy/GMC sells ~ 750,000 Silverado/Sierras per year.
Dodge ~400,000 Rams per year.
MOST people never bother to post anything on sites like this. Just since the 2004 redesign there have been 2,700,000 F-150's sold. Reading about some peoples issues with their trucks doesn't mean ALL F-150 have issues.
If most F-150's had major issues....people wouldn't keep buying them...therefore, Ford wouldn't be able to sell 900,000+ per year.
FYI: Nissan Titan has the worst reliability rating in the full size truck category.
I have owned several f150's and I kept then well over 150,000 mi.
The guy down the street is still driving my 94 supercab around it's got to have 200,000 on it by now. I've got a 04 screw I don't think it will hold up as well.
I hope I'm wrong.
I've got 215K on my 93 F150 5.0. It runs great. It sux fuel like it's living in the middle east, but it's allways loaded with 800+ lbs. It's just now needing a set of head gaskets.
Where is this info that the Titan has the worst reliability rating coming from? I find it hard to belive that statement.
I've put over 300K on 2 Nissans.

It is true. The big bad ugly titan has a lot of recalls and problems. Good to see japanese companies struggle. I have never liked nissan anyways. ugly product that isn't to reliable. I have done the head gaskets on several of there old 4 bangers in trucks. I think they were about 1985 models... had little over 50k on them when they blew
Ok Chris1450
Here's why I THINK SO
1. Clunk in rear end (new cluch packs installed) still does it.
2. Drive line slap from slip yoke Ford Said that it's normal. won't fix out of warranty.
3. **** pore design on the spark plugs I replaced mine @47,000 and broke 1.
4. The amount of valve train racket.
I have never owed any other truck accept a Ford.
This is my 5th and I Have 50,000 miles on it and I don't think I't will hold up as well as my other trucks did. IT'S JUST MY OPINION.
I know that these trucks are more compliacated then the trucks in the past and there for more likely to fail. And the service from Ford is becoming less helpful.
One thing to be aware of is the cam phaser is right under the fill hole for the oil. If you shove a funnel in there and break off one of the tabs you are hosed. Also this senor will not tolerate grunge. This information was relayedc to me while speaking to a head mechanic at a local ford dealer. Just fyi
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you should have came here before you bought an 04 you would have been advised to go up to an 05-06, 04 was the complete new truck and there are a few problems some resolved some not!!!LOL You may want them to change the plugs while you have it in there while they can still get them out without damaging the heads.
there is a tsb out about changing those pencil plugs, remove only on a hot motor. and timesert has inserts to fix them if needed. with a bad point of it can only by done with the head off.
needed is a special 9/16 plug socket from otc or other big name tool company unless some one else has found one cheaper then otc tools for it.
i hope some day all the companys will realize they can't use a tapered seat plug in a alloy part. with that i mean even glow plugs sieze up in the alloy heads.

All your info is correct but should not be needed in a truck I spent 32K on and there are many engine manufactures using alum. heads and I have heard of none that have the plug problems that ford does???
The VCT phasors were slightly redesigned in 2005 to prevent this issue.
The 5.4L 3V engine is a great engine MOST have no issues at all. It made Ward's Top Ten Engines List in 2006.
DRM,
Is it recommended that I change my VCT phasors in my 04 to the newer design, or should I leave it alone?
My 04 5.4 seems to run very well with only the typical upper valve trane slight "tick tick tick" sound.
Do the 06's have this same tapered plug problem?? I have 25000 on my 06 and am wondering if I should change the plugs before there is a problem
Yes yours are the same ford has used a tappered seat plug since the beginning of time!!! Hope they change when the new 6.2L boss comes out if not color me gone!!!!!!!!!!!!
My '05 FX4 had the engine knock going for a couple thousand miles before I was forced to take it in. The knock was louder than normal in the morning and decided to take it in to the dealer. On the way, the Service engine light came on. Ends up that because of the faulty phazer, the cylinder stopped firing. They replaced all the phazers in my truck as well as updated the spark plugs to an upgraded model supplied be ford. By the way, only had 16500 miles on it when the service engine light went on. Have run about a 1000 miles since and seems to be running fine.
