Interior Preparation

Hi:

I'm in the process of putting my 56 interior back together after installing a hanging brake pedal. I was getting ready to spray paint the metal floor board and I got to wondering if there may be something better than paint I could coat the floor board with that would help sound proof the cab from road noise. Of course most of this would be covered with carpet, so it would not have to be a perfect finish.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rick

what i've gotten into the habit of using on the floors is tremclad (believe it's called rust-oleum south of the boarder) rust paint just brushed on nice n' thick keeps the floor from rusting very well, particularily if you have much condensation or if a water leak develops..........sa far as sound deadining goes i believe you can buy the same stuff as is used under the rugs in new cars, i always just recycle it from cars i strip, then just lay my rugs over it.

You could use an automotive sound deadner sold at any auto paint store but I think Economan is right. Carpet padding is going to give you 95% of your noise reduction so I wouldn't waste my money. You can also use undercoat on the bottom of the cab floor. I use John Deere "Blitz Black" on interior floors and chassis. It is a very durable satin black paint that dries much faster then rustoleom. It will stick to bare metal but I usually put it over Rustoleum primer while it is still tacky. Very reasonably priced too. Quart is about $10. Gallon for $30.

I know of guys that use the pickup bedliner material on and under their floors. It seals it and would have some effect on sound.

I've also used some stuff called Hammerite. It's the poor man's version of POR15. It kills rust and can be put on fairly thick. The first time I saw it used was by an old expat Englishman on his freshly painted 57 MGA. I never saw paint put on so thick! At least 1/4 inch. I've noticed a lot less noise with just one coat. They have a website too...

FYI... Here in iceland (aka Manitoba, Canada) we can purchase both Tremclad and Rustoleum.

Be aware, they are NOT the same stuff. Rustoleum is the budget competitor that is runny like water and takes weeks to dry. Any and all vertical surfaces will have runs if you use that stuff. (Yes, I do use it on garbage projects, but not often)

Spend the extra $5/gallon and get the Tramclad if you are in the market for rust paint.

/Kris
