2 ton jack

I was jacking the front end of my truck today with my 2 ton floor jack...one of those $25 common ones. There's alot of play in the plunger. What I mean is as the truck gets higher, when I do the downstroke on the jack handle, must of the stroke is free play. It doesn't really get to pumping til darn near the end of the stroke...pretty useless. I removed the filler plug, put some hydraulic fluid in, but it's not any better. Anybody have any ideas how I can fix it? Thanks.

Buy another Jack, the seals are seeping fluid (leaking inside -air trapped) this time...get a jack that will LAST...the cheaper you buy, the less you'll get in the long run....most of them cheapo's are not worth even as a heavy paper weight.

I got a good 3 ton floor jack (which is quite a bit larger in size than a 2 ton) with 2 jackstands from Sears for less than $100. Its a great investment. It will also lift vehicles with large tires. It picked up my 33's great. If you've got the extra cash spot for an aluminum racing style jack they are much much lighter.

Check some places like harbor freight or northern tools. You can usually find some good deals there.

When you refilled the jack you didn't leave enough air space and the reservoir is drawing a vacuum as it empties which starves the pump.

Try this. Lower the jack to the bottom of the plunger stroke. Remove the fill plug and verify that the fluid is about 1/8" below completely full. (needs to have some air space) With the fill plug out, pump the jack up to the top of it's stroke. It will probably not have any trouble doing this and you will get a full pump stroke on each cycle. Put the fill plug back in while the jack is up trapping air in the reservoir.

Lower the jack. The plunger should pop up near the bottom due to the trapped air compressing and putting a little pressure on the hydraulics, but it should still lower okay.

Now try it on your truck and see if it doesn't work better. A good way to tell if this will work is to just try jacking your truck up with the fill plug removed.
