ok guys thanks alot well ill be picking up a gen1 lightning hopefully soon but the one i found had some serious engine damage that i dont want to start with so im on the search again. I am really excited about this project so if your in the tristate area, when i get the truck i may need a hand with some wrenches!!
I just read the thing about a 500+ c/i motor. Does someone sell a kit that does this? If so does the kit include ported heads? If not where can i get the stuff to make the kit and what heads can stand up to 750+ hp and torque? And what about the tranny, i know it wont hold up is there one that swaps in?
The 514 (well...it's a 520 now) is a crate engine that Ford sells. 625HP and 600ft-lbs of torque right out of the box. Add a supercharger and she will be a beast!
Ford also offers a 392ci engine (stroked 351W) that comes with 430HP and 450ft-lbs of torque.
The 392 will bolt right to the Lightening's motor mounts since it's the same block as the 351. However, the 520 will require some work since it uses the BBF mounts.
1982 and down to in the 60's ford full size p/u or 78 and up full size bronco. Also you can get a new one designed to your specs from wwwcurrieenterprises.com.
It seems to me, that the first step would be to find the truck, then go from there. I don't think the market is going to be filled with used lightings. I would of looked more seriously at the one with the trashed engine. With the bad engine, you could of gotten it cheaper and your rebuilding the motor anyway. All you need is the 351 block if your gonna do a stroker, you'll end up getting different heads as well. A lighting with a trashed engine would be perfect for what you wanna do.
the guy wanted almost 3 grand for a truck with an destroyed engine no way am i paying that i found a few on ebay and some other places for 5 grand or so. I am going to go over to my old neighbors house hey have built hotrods all their life maybe they know where i can get one? so far i am going to grab a 93-95 lightning wiht the 351w or maybe just get a 351w block from somewhere and swap it into a 93-95 ford, with afr 205cc heads with the block stroked to a 425 c/i motor. I need some help on a good manifold and cam and lifter package! Im going to use either hedman or pickrel headers. and no cats into a flowmaster muffler. THan get the c6 tranny that will hold 750 hp. Than a 9" rear end (maybe a dana 60?) i need more help on the rear end. So how does that look so far?
I would rather have the 9" than a 60, the 9" can be beefed up to be indestructable, they are used in nascar in all makes as well as a lot of different racing applications. Anther great freature about the 9", is the removable 3rd member. Anyway, sounds like your on the right track. If you can't find a lighting, I would also concider a 1st gen ranger with a 5.0 or 351 w, they look great and run like crazy. We have a couple up here at the strip with 302's in them, they run 10 and 11 second 1/4 miles, those things haul and thier sharp. Big engine, light body = speed !!!
thanks man i saw a 1st gen ranger that didnt look to bad. I found a refurbed 351w for like 1000-1200 dollars so i think i may grab that and see if i cant find an old ranger with no engine or a bad one. What are those guys doing for traction like what kinda slicks? And i will work on finding a 9" rear just have to go to the junk yard and some online places
