48-50 mercury tailgate
I have a beat-up 48-50 Mercury tailgate, and I was looking at it, and I think I can salvage the Mercury stamping to spot-weld back into a reproduction tailgate.
question is, how in heck can I cut the hole in the new tailgate, to be as precise as the factory hole?
and when I order the new gate, I'm told that there are two different styles of latches, how do I tell them apart?
and then, when I am done,what the heck am I going to do with it?

If you have the early Mercury tailgates used from 1946-early 1950 you should have the bracket for the chain inside the roll on the top of the gate, the later (late 1950-1952) tailgate had the bracket welded to the bottom of the top roll, right under the roll. But if are going to be going through that much trouble just buy a repro Mercury tailgate, I saw them a couple of years ago, same price as the Ford version, I believe.

well its the early version then.
if someone makes a repro tailgate, can someone get just the "Mercury" stamping that is spot welded in?
I originally got the tailgate with the intention of removing it for a project. (that never happened)

I'm not sure if you can get just the Mercury stamping. I was planning to get one of those Merc tailgates when and if I decide to build one of my trucks as a 46'47 Merc clone...I just bought all the chrome trim off a '47 Merc for $85...gotta do something with it.
