steering column
Hey,
Anybody got any idea how to disconnect the steering column from the steering box on a '60 f-100? I've taken it loose from the dash. I've taken the two bolts loose that hold the shift tube on. It will now swing around the shaft freely. But the column won't come loose. It's beginning to get annoying because I know I'm overlooking something simple. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Bob. I had a sneaky feeling it was something like this since there was no flex coupling or anything. :-X23 guess that steering column will be staying in !
I think they are just like the '53/'56. There's a clamp at the bottom of the column ( under the hood ) where it clamps to the steering box. Loosen that if you haven't. There's just a rubber bushing at the top end of the column to keep the shaft centered. The shift tube can stay with the column when it is removed. There's also a plate in the floor that must be removed that's around the column. BTW you have pulled the steering wheel haven't you?
You can still pull it out, however, the shaft in the middle that the steering whell threads to will stay as you pull the column out. Anyway.. Why you pulling the column out? Is the steering bead? That's another issue.

Thanks for the info guys. No, it isn't bad, I was going to remove it so I could remove cab from frame for restoration. However, after poring over catalogs and rust repair problems, I don't know what to do about truck. Haven't decided. But I have plenty of time. It's just something to tinker with when I'm bored. 'Preciate the help!
Hey, that's sounds like a big job to take on but once you start it'll be gratifying. If you're taking your time then it wont be hard because you'll have plenty of thinking time. I did the same thing to mine. I lucked out with minimal rust underneath, had to fabricate new center cab floor cross members out of some scavanged up street signs. If you need any info before you get into it, or just encouragement, I'm sure theres plenty of willing minds here.
Removing the steering column from from the 57-60 is not as difficult
as it looks. I have changed the one in my 60 several times over the
years. Just remove the steering wheel, bolts under dash, clamp
outside in the engine compartment, shift linkage, floor plate, and unplug wires under dash and you can slide the column off the post.
It will rub the headliner on the way out so may want to put a rag over top of column.
Remove pitman arm and bolts that hold the gear to the frame and
the box and shaft will drop out from the bottom. May have to jack
up the front a bit. jt
