I have a 66 F100 with a 240. It won't idle. The problem started awhile back with a whistling noise, that I associated with a vacuum problem. It would whistle at idle, and when I gave it gas it would go away. Then it got to a point where it had a rough idle, then it wouldn't idle. I rebuilt the carb, but to no avail. It will run above idle, or if I choke it. Seem like no gas at idle circuit. Any clues? Thanks..Not whistling now..
The fact that you can idel with it choked is telling me you are running to lean. Check your idel mixture screws. My rule of thumb is to close them until they just seat then back them out 1.5 turns and adjust from there.
Another possible issue is that you still have clogged passages in the carb. I would tear it down again, soak it in Berrymanns's DIP over night, then blow out every passage you can find with compressed air. Put it back together and try again.
another thing to check would be to use a can of carborator cleaner and spray it on all the gaskets associated with the carb and intake. if the motor changes at all when you are spraying the outer edges you have a vacuum leak.could be an intake gasket. needless to say that carb cleaner is volitle so caution is advised. check all hoses connected to the carb for age and wear. dutch
my 390 did the same after the carb was off for awhile had to pull the metering block out of the carb and blow though it with an air compessor. the problem was a bug in the idle circiut. was I did that runs perfect now. but when I got started with it the only way to get it to idle was with the choke.
