I have light to moderate smoke coming from my oil filler cap and dipstick. No oil shoots out of eith and i use about 1qt of oil per 1k miles. should i have the engine rebuilt or will it run like this for a while? I have 172k miles on the truck. Also i saw a ccv kit that they say stops blow by. Is this true? Thanks, Wayne
the ccv mod doesn't stop blow by it just redirects it from the intake to the atmosphere. Diesel have more blow by than gas engines do due to the higher compression. chances are you don't have an abnormal amount of blow by unless your air filter/ housing has been neglected and your engine has ingested dust. this is somewhat common if the stock air filter housing is not carefully taken care of. Best thing is to get rid of the stock air box if not for performance simply for better filtration!
To really know if you have abnormal blow by the crankcase pressure should be measured. but I don't know what the spec is
Hi miller i have a 95 too with same thing when the trucks running i take the oil filler cap off and i have a fair amount of smoke coming from there have you ever taken the cap off to see how much is really getting by the rings. mine also burns some oil but not as much as yours by the sounds of it ? about 2-3 quarts 5000 miles
Also my trucks blow by , was only about half as bad when i bought the truck and i have only put 10,000 mile on it ? its winter were i live and i now run 10w30 , i may have beening running 15w40 in the summer when i tested last ? would the differance in oil weights cause that much more blow by ? Thanks !
I am about to be cleaning my ccv screen too...its a black box on top of the drivers side valve cover...2 bolts, 2 seals and a hose that leads into it. I looked at mind today and looks like I will have to remove part of the air intake to get to it.
Hope that helps
There is an old swamp donkey trick (test), that is dam close!!!
Remove the oil fill cap and lay it over the hole. With the motor at idle if it blows the cap off, the pressure is to high with excessive blowby
Yes I have seen that test. Tried it on my truck but the oil fill extension makes it kinda hard. I haven't taken it off to try. I do have a compression gauge coming this week though! yeah!! I have two engines to test!
the desired number when doing the crankcase pressure test is 0, however on a 7.3, ford allows a max of 3 inches of water, that is measured at the oil fill with the proper adapter from ford and the crankcase vent tube plugged and the engine running at wide open throttle out of gear. they will all smoke from the oil fill, if it didnt i would be worried
