I bought the standard oil from my ford dealer last week and noticed something odd. The last oil change (August), it was $2.00 per quart. This time around, it was $3.99 per quart (list was actually $4.99). This is for the same Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend I've always used, from the same dealer, with crude oil prices being lower than they were a few months. What gives?
Wal-mart isn't too close to me but I'm sure this oil is cheaper somewhere else.
I think back in the summer my local Walmart had the Motorcraft oil for $1.98 a quart, then they raised it to $2.22. And the 5 quart jugs are around $10.30 each.
I've done the oil 3 times at the lower price. This is the first time I've seen the price this high. Those 5 qt jugs are the way to go. I used to buy my Mobil1 that way, if you can find it.
I am not 100% sure what I am paying through my local dealer now, but I just saw a service order from last year that had an oil change on it, and it was $1.50 for the 5w-20.
what dealer to you get your stuff from? This is from Madden, in Norwood. What gets me about this is that technically oil is cheaper now than it was last year, or even last summer. So why are costs for this product just starting to increase now? Off-hand, I don't think the oil filter price increased. I know one thing, I'll be shopping around for this stuff for my next oil change. It may not be worth it to go to the dealer for it anymore, even though it is nice proof to have that receipt from the dealer parts dept.
We use Lamoureux Ford in East Brookfield for all our needs. Were you quoting pricing on bottles, or a change? They fill out of the giant drums for the dealer oil changes, so that might have something to do with the pricing.
Prices out east are higher for everything. I think I've mentioned this in another oil related post, but I don't even bother doing my own because of the price differential out here. I dont know what the pricing looks like, but have you snooped around online for case deals?
Actually Rich I haven't. I'll do that today. I used to buy my volvo oil filters in bulk, much cheaper that way. Thanks for reminding me!
The oil change out here was around $38 or so. Taking that combined with having to drop my truck off or wait for it at a dealer that's off-roaded with my truck before makes me lean towards doing the change in the relative safety of my driveway. But with oil priced the way it is now, even doing it myself is coming out to $36 beans now.
I was looking at wallyworld the other day and 5w20 motorcraft was only $2.50 or so a qt. x6 = 15.00 and a filter costs $3-4 bucks...how in the world are you getting $36?
I use Phillips 66 Tropartic 5W20 synth blend. It is blended especially for fords. They also make the motorcraft oil. It is pretty much the same as motorcraft exept it is only $1.89 a quart at walfart

tylus,
if you read the first post, I was complaining about how much the price of oil has increased at the ford dealer. They raised it from $2.00 a qt to $3.99 a qt. That plus the filter got me a total of $36.62 for my last oil change. The change before that, from the same dealer for the same stuff, cost me $22.30. Somethings fishy.
