I would like to know the difference between the light duty F250 and the heavy duty? and how do you tell them apart? is there a difference between the brakes or what?
The rear hubs on the axle are visually different as well. The light duty axles have semi floating axles. The flange is straight like a 1/2 ton, but with 8 lugs. The heavy duty axles have a full floating axle, where you can unbolt the axle and pull it out with the hub still in place.
Depends the year also. The older "light duties " had single piston calipers on the front brakes. That is the givaway in the 70's and the alot of the 80's. I have seen full floating rear axles in older 3/4 ton "LD". My 79 does. Also the suspentions can be different from year to year. My 86 has heavier coil springs then does my 83 but the 83 has heavier rear leafs. Now the 86 is an extended cab and the 83 isn't. That may the reason. I can't speak for the late models but the older trucks could be anything almost. There are alot of differences between the 83's and 86's anyway.
You got the 3" shoes and drums on the diesel trucks in the rear. You need to be specific and specify 3" shoes. The light duty trucks only use 2 1/2" wide shoes.
