Hey guys. I'm a little curious and concerned about the MPG my truck has been getting. I live in central MA, and drove with my dad in the truck to Manchester, NH to drop off his snowmobile at the dealer for service. It was mostly highway, about 45-50 degrees outside. The sled was in the back of the truck, weighing nearly 550 pounds. Our average speed was 70-75 mph. We drove back with no load, and maintained the same average speed. There was very little backroad driving in comparison, but I found it odd that my truck was only getting 14.4 miles per gallon. It was a little over 200 miles there and back. It's a 2000 F-250 SD 7.3 4x4 sc swb auto with a 3.73 rearend and almost 159K on the clock. I do not think my mpg is normal, so any input, advice or opinions are welcome.
Did you fill the fuel all the way up to the neck? If not, your fuel measurements will be off. Our fuel tanks have a vent tube that prevents the tank from being filled completely with fuel. Instead you will get foam in the tank, and the actual amount put in on a fill up will vary between each fueling.
I got 14.5mpg driving almost 600 miles round trip to my cabin and back. Once i got on the freeway which is 12 miles away i set cruise at 70mph and did not increase speed or decrease anytime. This was with 4 full size adults and a sled in the back on the truck and tools. I thought it was below average as well, but I am running 36's and that isnt helping because of the size. Also we now have the ULSD and i think it winter blend(or i hope so cuz its getting cold out here!). Its a cclb with 150K on the clock and auto tranny 3.73.
Lol, my truck has no lie-o-meter. I did the calculations by hand. I also ALWAYS fill it to the max, and I run stock size tires (265/75/16) all terrains. I just changed my oil (Rotella 15w 40) and my fuel filter/air filter recently. Oh and by the way this was while using the 500ppm (old) diesel fuel. Even when running the ULSD my mileage is consistently low though. I know the new stuff can lower mpg, but it's just as bad with the 500ppm fuel.
To be honest with you, I did my mods with the intent to increase mpg. I got a lot more power (when I need it) but no increase in mpg, and no decrease either. And I drive conservatively.
Winterized fuel will drop your mileage about 1-2mpg or so and going over 70mph will start eating up the fuel quicker. Many have experienced an increase in mileage using certain DFA's too.
Nut
I have a '00 crew sb w/cap & 3.73s all stock (for now) & most of my driveing is interstate at 75mph & I averaged 15 for the last 3 tanks, warm weather my truck would average 17.
I dont figure it for each tank, seems to be much more accurate when I do it over several tank fulls.
sgrol...there is a difference...my truck is bone stock lol
We've got the same truck (if you have a crew-cab), although mine only has 65000 miles.......
But to answer your question....Yes....that mileage is way-low......
What were your RPMs?....I can imagine that at 70mph, the tach will read right at 2000rpm......at 75mph.....it'll read about 2200rpm.....these engines suck a lot more diesel when you're holding at above 2000rpm......
lately i have been getting 15mpg (99 F250 7.3 360000km)
it all started after i put on 285-75-16 and got very cold -35c but i was told it is overfueling to compensate for the cold, and i havent put any conditioner in but thats my fault been up at work for the last 21 days Fort Mac A.B.
Not to hijack but in my X I just got about 14.25 going 65-70 on a 450 mile+ trip. Hand calculated and the only things not in my sig are 295-75-16 (speedo recaled) and a turbomaster wastegate controller (set conservatively). Not towing and hauling 2 adults and 2-300 lbs. gear. 3.73's and 80K on the clock. I have thought about getting rid of just so diesel would drop bak down to $1/gal for all yall.
Only had the truck a week, and it's stock standard with 60ooo miles on the clock!. Just been serviced - oil & filters etc.
I used 85 litres of diesel to travell 468 kilometers, most of which was at 100 - 110 km/hr, (60 - 65 MPH) which is our MAX speed limit here and runs her at 1800 rpm's to 2000 rpm's in OD!.
I calculate that to be 15.6 MPG, and it inclued a little around town shopping cart work as well!.
No towing, just family of 5 aboard! Not very steep country - pretty flat most of the way!
