Does anybody have any experience hooking up aftermarket turn indicators on a pre-turn indicator vehicle? My 50 F1 has the controller installed on the column but the wires aren't hooked up. I can't figure out how to do it. Does anybody have a wiring diagram that you could scan and post?
Thanks,
Dan
I added a set to my 48 last fall. I'll try to get the instructions scanned tomorrow. They're on 3 pages I think. If you'd rather I email them as jpeg files, send me a note at mtflat(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
What color wires do you have coming from the turn indicator box on the column?
My '49 F1 came with non-functioning add-on turn signals. They consist of a lever mechanism that clamps on the column and a blinker relay under the dash. The switch is basically a three way switch like you'd have in your house, except it has a center neutral position where all lights are off. The relay is called a "Signal-Stat" and looks mid-50's. (I'm sure there are modern equivalents but I haven't looked yet.) I've connected what I have up on the bench and they seem to work fine. They didn't work in the truck because they were miss wired.
Here's how they connect up. The relay has three wires, which the label calls oak, yellow and blue. Oak connects to a fuse and from there to the ignition (-6V). Yellow goes to the common on the column switch. Blue goes to the pilot light on the column switch.
The column switch has four leads, yellow, red, black and green. Yellow comes from the pilot light on the middle of the switch and connects to the blue wire from the relay. Red comes from the common pole on the switch and connects to the yellow on the relay. Black connects to the right side blinker bulbs and green connects to the left side blinker bulbs. The only chassis grounds are at the four bulb sockets and at the pilot bulb on the column switch.
When you connect it all up, the oak wire on the relay is "hot" from the ignition and the yellow is also hot through a heater wire inside the relay. The common wire (red) on the switch is therefore also hot. When you flip the switch, that side's blinker bulbs become hot and turn on. The heater wire in the relay warms a bi-metalic and it begins switching it's output from the yellow to the blue wire. Thus the pilot light on the column switch blink alternately with the truck blinker bulbs.
There is one BIG problem in all this. You HAVE to have rear running lights and you HAVE to have brake lights, but you only have two filliments in your tail light bulbs. If you also want turn signals, you have to have three filliments. One solution is to mount seperate tail lights or dual bulb assemblies to do this. What I plan on trying is to use one of the small solid state converters designed to run trailer lights behind a dual bulb foreign car. I'm not sure it will work on 6V, but it is worth a try. If anyone else has tried this with success, I'd like to know.
Johann,
Sounds like mine is different than yours. Mine has a separate wire to each lamp and an extra wire that I think connects to the brake switch. I think the reason for that is that you can have both brake lights and rear turn indicators with the same, 2 filament bulb. My flasher wiring sounds just like you described. I think I have to just hook up the extra wire to the brake switch in place of the existing feed to the brake lights, disconnect the existing brake light feed and crossover wire, and connect up the two rear leads from the signal switch. I'd try it on the bench but my flasher seems to be bad.
Thanks for all the help,
Dan
What type steering column do you have? You can go to www.painlesswiring.com and look up wiring diagrams there they have the same ones posted that came with my wiring harness except mine aren't in the column the are monuted on the side with a turn indicator. You can also hook up the hot wire which in most cases is red then use a tester to find which wires are which I hope this helps.
What kind of flasher do you have two/three prong.
My truck uses a three prong unit (eschlin 535). Next to the prongs are stamped the letters X, P, L.
the power wire hooks up to the X terminal, there is a black wire on the "P" terminal and a red on the "L" terminal. these two wires go to the turn signal lever.
I have two wires "yellow" and "green" that go out to the tail lights.
The turn signal unit i have is Dietz 16-12.
My tail lights have two bulbs.
One of the lights is a two filamint bulb. This bulb acts as the taillight and stop light.
The other bulb would normally be the backup bulb, this bulb now acts as the turn signal. The lens over this bulb is clear but you can add a red or amber bulb.
The tail light unit i have is stamped Glow-brite TMC2211A.
If you are in my area some time your more than welcome to stop in and take a look at my truck.
Thanks everybody for all the info. If anybody is wants more info, check out this web sit that I found while surfing around (http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/SignalWiring.html). It's got pretty good wiring diagrams that should answer all my questions.
