Ball Joint Replacement 1999 Powerstroke
1 Remove tires and brakes.
2 Pull the 4X4 lock mechanism
3 Remove the 4 nuts on the back of the steering knuckle and pull the shaft out with the bearings. You may need a drift and hammer to push the seal out.
4. Disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle
5 Remove the ball joint nuts.
6 There is a split sleeve in the ball joint holes on the steering knuckles. They have to be pushed up to release the ball joints. I used a ball joint separator (fork) and a 5 pound hammer.
7 Once you've droped the steering knuckle you have to press out the joints. Any machine shop could do this for a fee. I've heard of people using a vice or a ball joint cup of some sort, I had access to a press in a buddy's garage. Don't forget to remove the snap ring on the bottom joint.
Assemble in reverse order.
Torque values are year specific, I got mine out of a Hayne's guide.
I had some difficulty with the steering knuckles not wanting to move after being torqued. I torqued the top first and the problem went away.
Hope this helps..
