I have a 02 PS with the auto-Manual Hub system, and a dash mount selector.
When the hubs are in the auto position I have no 4wd, even though the 4x4 light comes on. When I lock the hubs in manualy 4wd works fine. long story short I found out I have a vaccum leak somewhere between the pulse vaccum switch and the hubs. my question is, does anyone know where the typical leak points are down there? I assume this system sucked, because later years went back to the good old fasioned manual hubs.
That ESOF system can be a real pain. The problem you have is in the vacuum system somewhere. IMO the auto / manual hubs should be replace with Warn premiums at the very least. You can get by with what you have for now, just know that you will have to get out and lock the hubs the good old fasioned way. With the factory hubs (if you keep them) you will still want to verify that the axle is really dis-engaged after you take the truck out of 4x4. Those hubs have been known to stay engaged (stuck if you will).
I had the same problem with my 99. After three years of owning it the lines that go to the axles were cracking. I replaced the lines and it worked fine.
You can find the leak with a vac pump and a little time. Just pop off the line at the vacuum switch and see if it will hold vacuum. If not the leak is closer to the wheel if so that side is ok.
