Funny the extra fuel tank question came up. Just yesterday I was talking with one of our customers who has been having some weird 'check engine' and so forth lights on his '03 or '04 F250 (gas) truck who also runs an extra fuel tank. Evidently his dealer tried to get out of the warranty work because they said by tapping into the fuel system with the extra tank was causing all of his problems ... said that was strange because the same tank has been on all three of his previous Ford trucks and couldn't begin to tell me how many hundred of thousand miles between the three without nary the first issue. Sounds like a crock to me.
Depending on the install and how the tank is connected I could see this causing evap type codes and a service light. Every few years the spec's are tightened on Evap leaks. I am not saying that it is definitely bad, I just think it is possible.
The connection is made in the fill neck hose. A tee is inserted and you have a 3/8 hose with a manual shut off valve. You run your factory tank down then fill back up and shut the valve. It doesn't actually tie into the factory fuel lines to the motor or any guage wiring. I pull a fifth wheel camper and wanting to limit my stops at truck stops. Seems like some truckers and truck stops don't like use because we or on vacation while they are working and the station wants more than a 30 gal sale.
Well then as long as that connection/tee/valve is absolutely leak free then it should not effect the service engine light. Just remember that even the slightest fuel vapor leak will be noticed by the PCM
I run the transflow 50 aux tank and have never had a problem one. it is great to have 80 gallons on tap. It also has a pump and comp control to balance the transfer so both tanks go down at the same time. I most certantily cant complain with approx 1000 mile range before fillups.
Anyone done the swapout to the larger aftermarket fuel tanks, such as the ones from Tranfer Flow?
I'm looking at the 46 gallon midship replacement tank for my '03 F250 crew short bed. That's about 20 gallons more than the stock tank, or roughly slightly under double the driving distance.
