In the owners manual it was recommended not to exceed 50 mph, correct me if I'm wrong. If the transfer case is engaged in 4x4 hi. I always considered this, if the hubs are locked and the transfer case is in 2wd. The front out put on transfer case is turning when the front hubs are locked. If the hubs are locked I don't exceed max. speed of 45 mph.
you are correct that the front output gear is turning on the t-case but inside that case and all gear driven cases is a sliding idler gear that does not contact that output gear when the case is in 2 hi the 50 mph recomendation is when you are sending power to both axels
Wow. Thanks for the input guys. Essentially, I only intend to use the 4x4 for winter weather driving.
You're telling me that I can use the 4x4 to get to the clear road, then just pop into neutral at a stop light and shift the tcase into 2 hi and roll down the road with my hubs locked. I didn't know that.
I'll try it the next time I NEED to go out in the snow and ice.
You dont even have to stop to shift from 2wd to 4 hi or from 4hi to 2wd.With the 205 part time T-case ,As long as you are going a constant speed.I have done this around town but never over 30mph.Can you still do this going over 30mph?The owners manual just says you can shift on the go as long as your at a constant speed.
lower speeds are better for shifting but theoretically you can shift it at any speed with the different size tires you may not be able to shift while moving though
The front axle components (tie rods, bushings, u-joints, freshly packed wheel bearings and etc), front drive shaft, splines on front drive shaft including the u-joints, must not show any signs of wear.
Or the front end and the front drive train will vibrate when the hubs are locked, and the truck speed increases.
the wheel bearings are turning no mater if the hubs are locked or not the locking hub is a mechanical disconect of the hub and wheel bearing assymbly from the axle shafts the tie rods and bushings have nothing to do with the hubs now a bad u joint or bent drive line or broken axel shaft or bearings in the third member itself or in the t case could cause drivability problems with the hubs locked and if you have a 203 case you dont have hubs unless you have a kit to make it part time and you have to modify the t-case itself as well as install locking hubs
My truck has 33s on it and it shifts smooth on the go.In fact my transfer case is harder than hell to shift while stoped,But shifts smooth and easy while moving.
Yes you can leave your hubs locked and shift into 2hi just let off the gas unloading your driveline move your tcase 1 notch do not go into neutral you can also shift back into 4wd on the go the same way. But you must have the same size tires on the front and rear running mismatched tires is like running two different gear ratios. I run all winter like this hubs locked one hand on the magic lever. By the way 240 pounds of sand aint enough 400 is about what you'd want I carry 600 but mines a 3/4 ton
OK...I've learned a lot so far. Thanks for all of the help.
Next up...I CAN shift from 2 hi to 4 hi with no issue. For some reason, now I can't shift back with the truck running. In neutral, park, drive, and reverse, the tcase will not shift out of 4hi. Until I shut the truck off. When the engine is off, it shifts easily. Sounds like something isn't right.
I did use 4hi to get out of my driveway last night...and put the truck in neutral at a stop light and shifted to 2hi and drove with the hubs locked to my friends house. Left the truck there all night...this morning, I got to the end of his street and hit a slick spot...couldn't start motion...so I just slipped it into 4hi and it crawled right out...but then I couldn't shift back to 2 hi.
Drove home in 4hi (under 35 mph...) and played with it in my driveway. I still could not get it out of 4hi until I shut the truck off. Then it shifts easily. So I put it back in 4hi, turned the truck back on...same issue. For some reason, I cannot shift from 4hi to 2 hi with the engine running.
