Yeah, could be the axle u-joint and/or too much play in something else also, so check everything on the front end also. And if it has alot of miles on it and never changed the ball joints i suggest changing all 4 the ball joints at once while you change the axle u-joints.
yeah grease everything you can get the gun tip to man, while you are down there check the differential oil front n rear because my buddy didnt change his rear diff oil and he broke his pinion gears from not servicing his rear axle fluid.
Most likely a bad joint, when backing up the tire camber changes (basically the toe in for driving forward forces the tire inward at the top when backing up on TTB), a lot more when backing up a hill, which is why it is more pronounced because the joint angle really changes.

The other thing is a bad automatic hub trying to engage while in reverse and it is not disengaged while driving. Entirely possible her 4x4 system does not work properly.
Check the front sway bar links, when broken they can cause banging.
