My Expedition came with the standard tow package, not the HD Tow package. I am trying to upgrade the vehicle by swapping out the Class III hitch for the Class IV shown in the optional equipment list for the HD Tow package. No aftermarket hitches are made for th2005 Expedition. The dealer can't order a class IV from Ford. I suspect that the HD Tow package has the same hitch as the standard tow package. My suspicion is supported by some of the wording on Ford's web site. like when they refer to a "class III/IV" hitch.
Is there really a class IV hitch ? If there is how can I get one?
Interesting! The Ford service Consultant at the dealer said that she'd bet I had a transmission cooler too. She told me to look for a unit in from of the radiator, just behind the grill. I looked and sure enough there is a black box and a small radiator like heat exchanger with tubes that run to the transmission. Hmmmmm Maybe I have everything but the brake controller.
I have a 4 pin. I am going to go to Uhaul and have a 7 pin or 5 pin put on. The trailer has surge brakes, so I need the reverse lamp wired to the connector.
The HD tow package includes:
An 11 row transmission fluid cooler in stead of the standard 7 row unit.
A thicker, higher capacity radiator.
7 pin trailer wiring harness.
The HD package also requires a 3.73 axle ratio.
The hitch itself should be the same.
I have a 2005 non HD tow package Expedition and need to add a provision for reverse lights to my trailer wiring harness to accomodate surge brakes as well. Let me know how yours works out.
Very interesting info guys! I am happy to hear that the hitch is the same. I do have the 3.73 axle ratio. I'll have a 7 pin put on to replace the 4 pin. Thanks for the help.
