I have a 1958 ford, and am in the process of getting her ready for the paint shop. I had to take the doors off to clean up and paint the interior. For the life of me I cannot get the doors adjusted correctly when I try to put them back on. Since I painted the door jams and hinges, the old lines (where it was hung originally are gone).
Any help in how to get these doors aligned would be much appreciated.
I thought about posting this in the bodywork area, but I felt that this forum would be more exact to my truck.
Hi,
Here's how I do it. I loosen all the hinge bolts that go into the door pillar, and the ones that hold the door to the hinge. I only loosen them enough as to where I can move the door with a gentle force. (you have to remove the small hinge access panels to get at the door to hinge bolts). Adjust up and down with the hinge to pillar bolts. Once you are correctly positioned, Open the door slowly and tighten the bolts. For front to back alignment, use the door to hinge bolts. With the door closed, evenly space the door. These bolts can then be tightened from inside the cab with the door closed.
I hope this helps.
That's a good procedure - I'm going to put it away in a safe place so I have it when I get to the doors on my F-250. A friend had the same door adjustment problem on a similar project. I can see now that doing things in the order you suggest would have been a whole lot easier than the monkey-business we ended up trying. It took three men and a boy to finally get those doors in place and we were all exhausted.
I just spent ALL day trying to align my doors after the weatherstripping install. The ruber went on great, the alignment was an absolute nightmare, and its still not done. I finally had to take a break, and get back on it later. Has anyone had this big of a nightmare? and if so, what ended up happening, did you ever get your doors to fit right?
I am having a similar problem lining up the fenders after my IFS install. They are too far back, and as a result, when I open the doors, I have chipped a bit of paint off each fender. Door seam is lined up fine; just need to adjust the fenders...
How do I move the fenders forward? I noticed that they are not lined up with the cowl seam.
