OK...so I just got off the phone with the service advisor at Ford. My truck has a grinding/racheting noise comming from the front drivers wheel area. I figured I'd get the truck serviced at the same time. This is what I was quoted.
Now add on 1491$ for BFG AT's(285/65/18 E) installed that's 3027!!!
Are these prices acurate? I drive in ALOT of stop and go traffic so I was told to change the drive line fluids. Damn and that's before they look for the noise....
Well if you have the 5.4 why are they quoting trans flush and differential change, since the owners manual states lifetime. Plugs are 100K miles, but in this engine, they have been known to break so that may be a good decision.
Ask why the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, is this on the action of a TSB, if so why are you being charged?
For the tranny he advised it. I drive alot in stop and go traffic and often short trips. Just figured it would be a thing to do.
The tires I shopped around, and the dealer beat my best price by 50$ a tire. My best price was 360 a tire and they quoted me 305 or 310 a tire. Haven't found anywhere cheaper in Canada. Prices sound reasonable?
Ford Dealers will typically beat any tire department tires. If you've never tried, you may want to ask your local dealership about the deals they get on the same tires we all like to have on our rigs.
$200.00 for diff fluid seems a bit steep. Its not like they are having to pump it out with a specalized tool or something. Of course, I've never done a diff on my new truck. All my older junk was drip, plug and fill. Same with the t-case.
^^I asked the same thing. He said the money is spent on the fluid. He says these trucks take a special synthetic fluid that costs 30$/l, and running the wrong fluid would void my warranty. I gotta look up how many quarts they take. I'm hoping 6 for 200$!!!!
The tires are BFG AT's in 285/65/18. And since load range D is no longer available in this particular size in Canada, I have to buy the E range tire. I haul some pretty heavy stuff, so I don't mind the extra 2 ply sidewall. Anyone who has hauled some weight on these garbage stock tires knows what I mean. Anyone have alot of mileage on a newer series F150?
What warranty? You have 60K miles. The transmission takes Mercon V it doesn't come out to $200. Use the Motorcraft Mercon V trans oil as per the recommended factory spec. You can buy the 90w-140 Mobil 1 synthetic diff fluid for about $12 US per qt. Mobil 1 meets the GL5 Ford spec. Add the friction modifier if you have LS for about $8. You are paying for the labor to drain the diff fluid, since the cover has to come off.
All this still doesn't answer why they are going against the Ford recommended intervals. I know $$$$!
Dealer better than tire store not that I have found! Ex: Sears sells the BF Goodrich Log trail 265-60-18, original equipment tire for $128, the dealer wanted $175
4door: You are being bent over as kevin says diffs and tranny never neee to be done especially the diffs unless you are in mud and water as in 4 wheelin, only thing I see here is plugs and tranny not a bad idea to do but they are way high of course I don't know what the exchange is now??
I'll second what Kevin and Lineman said . Dealer is trying to screw you over. Unless the diff's ingest water, there is no reason to change them. Having THEM change the plugs is money well spent!!
i believe the "racheting" sound is coming from your "auto locking hubs." the sound should go away when you engage the front axle. the hubs use vacuum to engage the front wheels - the diaphram inside the hub seems to go bad over time. ford has redesigned these hubs 3 times now so make sure you get the current version.
Wow, I think the prices on everything you list are a bit steep. You can gather that from the chatter that has been generated. You apparently don't do any of your own maintenance or you would have laughed in the dealer's face.
Check your owner's manual for scheduled maintenance and fluid capacities.
Check on-line for better tire prices. Tirerack.com is a good place to start.
FX4dude is on the money for the ratcheting noise.
Actually I usually do all of my own maintenance. However I don't have my owners manual and don't know what takes what. I guess I should pick one up. As long as this thing is under warranty I won't touch it. After all that is why I paid the extra 1500$ for the warranty. I'll scratch the diff fluid off the list. I was gonna change the plugs myself, but hearing about them breaking off and what not made me think twice.
I checked tirerack.com and they have the AT's listed at 275$CDN per tire. I don't mind paying the extra 20$ a tire and not have to deal with online buying and shipping. Anyone know the newest part number for the hubs? Thanks for all the replies!
