Recently, my driver's side door has not been correctly indicating opened or closed. When the door is opened, the radio is supposed to shut off. This does not happen. I end up opening and closing the door several times before it finally shuts off. Also, upon closing the door, the interior lights should shut-off. After opening and closing a few times, the door finally signals closed and the interior lights shut off.
The door latch is working fine. The door actuators are still working, but sometimes seem a little week. Other times seem just like new.
Could the door striker be worn out?
I took the door panel off and investigated last weekend. I sprayed some WD-40 but still have the problem.
No, I believe "switch" is the correct term in this case. You need to replace your door-ajar switch. Or you can do what many folks have done, and dowse the thing with WD40.
The door-ajar switch provides the signal to the GEM for it to decide that since the engine has been turned off, the radio must now also be deactivated. The GEM also will use that input to activate the interior lights. Do a search here for "door-ajar" ... been discussed many, many times.
I'm having a simialr problem on 2002 X. Sometimes the door ajar light on the dash comes on when all doors are closed tightly, The courtesy lights only come on when the dash switch is used or the door is opened right after shutting the engine off. If you close the door, wait for the lights to shut off automatically and re-open the door the the lights will not come on. The key in ignition alarm will sometimes sound. The radio will stay on after opening the door. The problem with the lights doesn't seem to be a switch problem because none of the doors will turn the lights on as described above.
Could this be a computer problem?
Update: I purchased and installed the door ajar switch tonight in the driver's door, ~$25. After the help here and checking the old switch vs. the door ajar indicator, I was optomistic the new switch would solve the problem. Unfortunately, it did not.
Sometimes, with the key in the "ON" position, the door ajar indicator will NOT be on. Then when I start the EX, the door ajar indicator will turn ON.
Also, once the ajar indicator is ON, opening and closing ANY door (including rear hatch) will eventually turn the indicator off. Sometimes one open/close will do it, othertimes it will take a few open/close sequences.
Also, sometimes when the door is opened and I try to lock the doors, the locks will instantly unlock themselves.
Any other help would be greatly appreciated. May have to take it to the dealer but would rather not.
Some of that sounds familiar. I drove 150 miles today with 8 stops and my door ajar light was on the entire time. 3 of the 8 times I had to re-start the truck and shut it off and remove the key immediately to get the radio to turn off after opening the door.
We got home after dark and I was unloading the truck, I left the Interior lights on, via the manual switch, and the auto timer turned them off after about 20 min.
I have not replaced any switches yet, I have read several threads that only indicate this as a solution to interior lights staying ON after closing the doors. I wonder If my problem is a GEM problem. Do the Excursions have a problem with the windshield leaking water into the GEM computer like the Expeditions????
I've been reading around some other sites and think I'm going to have to take her to the dealer. Possibly VSM (part # 4c7z-15604-ac,labeled "lock alarm kit")? The old one has to be used to program the new one.
Hi,
I am having the same problems that you are describing.
I replaced my vsm and most of the issues are now resolved. You do not need the old vsm to program the new one. Place the key in the ignition and turn from 2 ( LOCK) to 3 (OFF) and cycle between 3 (OFF) and 4 (ON) eight times in rapid succession ( within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the 4 (on) position. The doors will lock to confirm that programming mode has been entered.
Then within 20 seconds press any button on your transmitter. Your locks will lock/unlock to confirm the transmitter is programmed.
You must follow this procedure again to program any other transmitters you have.
Also if you have checked your door switches and they pass the ohm test, be sure to check the wires from the door to the body. This is were most of the wires break.
I hope this helped ya, NJ Poolman
