There where some old AOD used on light trucks like mine. But they don't last long enough, specially towing. I'm not sure if the AODE where used on trucks I guess no, but todays trucks using V6 4.2L engine use also 4R70W, which is basically same AODE.
The AOD was in trucks from the early 80's to 93. In 94 it went to the 4R70W. 302 only, at least for the 4R70W. I've got 320,000 on one, but it does need an overhaul.
Now even the '07s with the 5.4 have it, probably with upgrades though. Same old pan and case shape though. Cars got the AOD about the same time, then sometime it became the AODE, and now it's the 4R70W.

The problem was on the combination 4.9L + AOD(E) or 4.9L + 4R70(W) since the 4.9L can develop high torque at relative very low RPM, this cause the tranny to burn out since the tranny pump can't produce enough volume/pressure at this low RPM's.
A new high volume pump will reduce this problem but still been present.
With V8 engines there is no problem since the stall RPM is usually 2400 or more, then the tranny pump can produce enough volume to hold the clutches packs.
