bad leak

Hello again out there, first thanks for all of your help on previous topics. Now, I have again a 93 5.8 and it seems to have a pretty good leak coming from the bottom of the oil pan, not around the gasket area but directly from the bottom. After a look see i have found a buldge which looks to be corrosion or a previous repair. Does anyone know any quick repairs, putty, so forth? Also for the long term can you remove the oil pan without removing the engine? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again... Also I have noticed a brown sludge coming from the oil breather tube that leads into the stock air filter box. What is going on, good, bad any help please. thanks..

The oil pan can only be removed by lifting the engine. You do not have to remove the engine, only lift it enough to get it between the cross member and the engine.

For a fix like this I like to use JB Weld. It's an epoxy like cold metal weld repair. Clean eveything around the hole for about 1/2 inch and make sure no oil will drip onto the weld from the inside (clean it really good), then smear a good sized glob over the hole. If it is more than a 1/4 inch in diameter, I've had good results with putting a glob on waxed paper and making it about 1/4 inch larger than the hole on all sides and about 1/4 thick. The apply this to the hole - leave for 12 hours and the waxed paper peels right off. Sand paper, files, or whatever can be used to shape or smooth it. If it looks thin or weak in spots rough it up with 120 grit sandpaper and give it another shot. This repair has been going strong on my 89 since June when I started leaking gas from about 30 pinholes on the tank where the mounting strap sits.

Oh yeah, the brown sludge - a little blowby from around the rings or valves and moisture noticeable because of the lower temperatures right now. The blowby isn't a big issue until it reduces engine performance and a compression check will check that out.
