I have been into performance aftermarket parts for years but on my current ride... 2006 F150 Scew 4x4 5.4 I am wondering if there will be any major diiferences in performance bwtween buying a Magnaflow cat back or getting a local shop to replace the pipe and muffler from the cat back - which im sure will be cheaper. I have found the Magnaflow siso kit for $400 shipped - Magnaflow has 3" tubing, not sure what most shops around here use...
I would go local.
You can get a Magnaflow muffler and 3" from local person and save you some money.
I actually had a Mag installed and left the stock pipes other wise. I understand if I add a tuner etc. etc. I may need to replace it, but at this point it seems to breath just fine and sounds much better.
That is what I did. I just figure if your going to push the truck past stock with a tuner etc. You may could use more flow. If I do a tuner or other changes I will look at increasing the pipe size then.
The magnaflow Muffler was shorter than the stock one, so they had to add a piece of pipe. Other than that its all factory here.
If you want a more noise you may try removing the muffler and just add a piece of pipe for an old school type "straight pipe".
The mag and pipe cost me bout $130.00 out the door at a local shop.
Well it will take a LOT to get your truck to move like a chipped diesel, even with all the mods I had on my n/a F150, i was still almost a full second behind our chipped F250 FX4.
The exhaust is up to you. If youre getting it for performance, its hard to beat a mandrel bent 3" system from magnaflow. If youre going for sound, a muffler replacement will be just fine. The best performance I have found on my own truck was custom true duals with a Magnaflow DIDO.
And FYI, get with me before you buy anything magnaflow, I can usually beat advertised prices for anything magnaflow.
Hi Bob! What could would the cost be for a cat-back for a F150 KR? We haven't chipped it...yet...but it's probably not too far down the road. (Also, we appreciate the knowledge and experiences all of you share...we have learned quite a bit..Thanks to all!)
I would either purchase the Magnaflow system, or go with only replacing the muffler. I hate it when shops weld up a custom system with a stainless muffler and alumized pipe. I had a quote a couple of years ago on one of my Silverados to have custom exhaust done. I wanted to stick with stainless pipe since the truck came from the factory with that. $300 more bringing it to around $800. I bought an all stainless bolt on kit with the same exit runs for a little over half that and put it on myself. I have seen what road treatment during the winter, and salt water (living on the water) does to aluminized pipe. Not pretty. Cheaper to do it one time for me.
Thanks! With what we've read, the Magnaflow seems to suit our needs. My wife put a Borla stainless system on her Ranger, a few years back, and was very happy with the sound (I was totally impressed that she did the install herself!!)...but the 5.4 is a totally different animal, and there's many, many options...almost too many!?
Is there much difference in the sound between the SISO, SIDO, and DIDO? Also, we are looking to add a chip at some point...is one much better than the other?
If youre talking about a cat back system, then the performance will be the same using a SISO or SIDO kit, it is just personal preference, really. If you have a towing package, you may have problems with duals out the rear using the magnaflow kit.
As far as sound, it will sound about the same, but you may find a better rumble using a dual out kit since the sound will be coming from 2 places on the truck.
As far as a chip goes, pretty much everyone will recommend the edge, because pretty much everyone already has it. To me, thats not a good enough reason. Our BamaChips custom tuners can deliver a more in depth tune that is made JUST for your truck, and can adapt to all your mods and get their true power potential. Thats what I always recommend!
