When I turn the key on in my 1984 F-350 with my newly installed 1990 7.3L IDI engine, the glow plug light flashes off and on quickly and then it stays on. It worked fine a while ago before I had to redrop the engine and put on a different oil pan and oil cooler. Now it doesn't work.
I wanted to search because I thought I had seen something like this on here before, but I can't find the search option under the "forum tools" pulldown menu.
I jumped the gp's at the relay and counted to ten but it still wouldn't start. I even tried ether. Do i need to bleed off the air to the filter since the fuel system has been opened up. I did find that I had not reconnected the fuel line at the fuel pump (that took a lot to admit) so i don't know if I've bled all the fuel out of the system.
Crank the engine over for 20 second only, while draining any air from the filter at the Schrader valve (tire valve) use a rag to capture any fuel until bubbles are gone. Caution: Engine may start. Wait 3 minutes for starter cool down. Filter should be drained of air, now attempt a fresh start with foot to floor and Fast idle and timing advance operating.........should start in 20 seconds.... Ensure batteries are at top operating power.
You and I have traded messages about his some time ago and it was just going to take too long and be too frustrating to do the wiring myself, so I had the truck towed to an automotive electrical shop here in town that did it for me. It was not a good experience and I won't be using them again, but the engine ran after they got done. They assured me that they could do this but then I found that they had connected the glow plug harness to the same side of the relay as the power so the gp's were getting power all the time (fortunately I discovered this before I ran the engine too much and have only lost one glow plug).
So it its the chassis of an '86 (this is not my '84 F-250) with the gp harness/controller of a '90.
Thank you all for the suggestions, I'm working my way through them.
The 90 controller is mounted on the rear of the intake manifold with the relay.
The 86 relay is on the fender well, and the glow plug light is tied into that relay on the 86.
What should have happened was the light lead should have been removed from the original relay and moved to the new relay.
The battery lead and glow plug power to the new relay should be on the same terminal of the 86 original relay.
Not really a hard job if you look at it for a little.
