OD light flashing and speedometer not working
Hello everyone. I just brought a 1996 Explorer 4x4 V6 XLT from a friend thinking it was an easy fix by answers I found of the problem on the net. Even search threw the threads here. Right now my OD light is flashing and the speedometer is bouncing around not detecting the current speed. Also it's not going into gears smoothly. I've replaced the VSS as well as the gear on the end of it. Anyone have or had this problem before? What was the fix for it?

How about checking the sensor wiring or connectors? I scrounge the junkyards a bit and have pulled quite a few connectors and found green stuff inside and missing pins on a couple of occasions. Did you check the shipside wiring connector for anything funny like bent, missing or corroded pins? Chafing on the wiring? How about checking continuity through the wiring (including the new sensor)? Beyond that, I don't have any other suggestions without a wiring diagram.

I did forget to mention that when I turn off the truck and when I go to drive it again it comes back on with in a mile of driving.

Since you mention the OD light is flashing, pull the diagnostic codes for the transmission. Since it's the OD light versus the check engine light, you might not be able to pull the codes using the standard consumer-grade scan tool, but often trying is free at the local auto parts store. If they're unable to retrieve any codes for the transmission, then you might be able to find a local transmission shop that can help you out.
