Anybody know what engines will bolt up to my 86 fm145 4 speed with overdrive Trany? Right now my 2.9 is fine but I have full use of a garage and lift with all the tools I could ever use. So I should take full advantage of the equipment While I can. I do not want to change much but the engine and maybe the rear end. I have acces to Explorers and other Ford vehicles from A friends bone yard. My goal is to also put wider 15's with fender flares for a better look and footprint on the trail. Also, I have full acces to mitchel ondemand and alldata. So if anybody needs some free info? just send an e-mail to dryfire152@yahoo.com and I will see what I can do. Also is my info correct about my trany, is it a 145 or 146? it came out of an 86 basic model B2. Its now in my 88xlt B2 that had a P,O,S, Auto (JUNK)in it.

Reason: trany ??
a 4.0L will bolt up to it but i wouldnt do it, if i was to put a 4.0L in i would take the m50dr1 its much stronger than the fm 145 you have now. i envy you on the friends bone yard thing. cause that exactly what i want to do to my 86. (drop in a 4.0L, 8.8 rear, dana 35 front.) just to fully answer your question these engine all have common bell bolt patterns, 2.8L, 2.9L, 4.0 OHV, and i beleive the 4.0 SOHC, being they are all cologne engines. (made in a cologne germany) and all are 60 degree blocks.
My FM-145 was run dry of gear oil (not on purpos) for a few months, daily driving. I took it apart, and everything looked new, no wear at all. It did not heat up at all even with a 100+ mile trip with steephills the day I decided to check oil level. That tells me I have a strong one !!!
