I have a 400 and i want to put some rebuilt 351C heads on it to freshen it up a little and i was about to get started and i realized that my 400 has a water cross over passage in the intake and 351Cs don't. How does this work do you just put the 400 intake on and leave the passage dry or do i need to get that passage drilled in the heads? I have always heard that the 351C and 400 heads could be swapped am i wrong? Thanks

a 400 does not have any water in the intake manifold, nor does a 351M or 351C. if you have a water passage in the intake, you don't have a 335 series engine. can you post a pic somewhere?
Then what is the extra passage on the 400 intake that runs right behind the distributor my truck has it and it just has a plug in it i assumed it was for water because i don't know what else it could be. I am ver familiar with 351C and I know my truck has a 400 in it, theremostate in block 8 bolt valve covers 400 emissions decal... but i don't know what this passage through the front of the intake is mabey its not water but if not what is it. Like i said never delt with 351Ms or 400s but the cleveland doesn't have this passage.

sounds like an A.I.R. tube for the air pump/emissions system. if you take the plug out while it's running exhaust should come out. does it connect to the heads?
It is a Thermactor AIR port, I found a web site that had it labled it is #5. All the 351Cs i have had were 71 or70 model years so they didn't have this if any of them did i don't know but thanks for the help i thought all the manifolds were dry so i'm assuming there is a port in the head that connects with the exhaust where fresh air is introduced that my cleveland heads don't have. thanks again. http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/parts/pics04.html
