Cruise control not working

I just got a 1999 F250, and the cruise control doesn't seem to work. I checked the fuses and nothing seems to burned out. What could the problem be. Also, the overhead console that tells gas mileage and what not doesn't work either. Would that be tied to the cruise control problem???? Help please.

The first and most important thing to do is check if you have a brake switch mounted on the master cylinder. If it's leaking inside the switch, then you need unplug it right away and then get it replaced. It goes to the cruise control and has also set some trucks on fire.

Does your horn work? Do you have a airbag error light? Common to all these and the cruise is the clockspring behind the steering wheel that is famous for breaking.

Do you have a check engine light on? Do you have a abs light on? Does your speedo work ok? Common to all these and the cruise is the vehicle speed sensor.

WOW! Set the truck on fire, not good. And actually I have something pertaining to that. I was cleaning the truck today, and opened the hood. And about a min after the hood was open something all a sudden started smoking for a couple secs. The smoke looked like it was coming out of a switch, and I think it may have. We pulled the switch off and it was real greasy. Then we checked the brake lights, and they didn't work. So we checked a fuse, and the fuse was blown out. So we replaced it thinking nothing of it. So what precautions do I need to take???????????? I don't know if you call it a switch thought, it was more like a plug. And no all the other stuff you mentioned works.

Just replace the switch. It should screw into the master cylinder. They were faulty and the brake fluid would leak into the elec part of the switch.

This is probably part of your cruise problem. It disconnects when you tap the brake pedal, and if it's not connected, the cruise will not work at all.

Can that switch be picked up locally at a parts store like auto zone or advanced auto?

I believe it's a dealer item. Same PN that was recalled on the F150s, but they won't recall them on the 250s even though the sameissues exist. Brilliant!
