I am building a 48 f1 with a camero front clip. Need to "C" notch rear frame to provide more axle clearance. I have never even seen a "c" notch. So, any pictures and/or instructions would be appreciated.
I did one on my son's '70 GMC. We used steel pipe and welded it in and boxed the frame. There's a couple of crappy pictures here (pgs 4-5 I think): http://www.geosurface.com/c25buildup/Truck.asp
I'll have to find a picture of the finished notch.
thanks bterry and create. I could not find any pipe so I am bending some 3" X 1/4"
flat iron. will box frame. create - what truck is in your pitiures? It looks a lot like mine
(even the same jack stands) I'm asking because I don't know how much clearance I need.
my truck is a 55 F-100.. I was told you need atleast 3 inches of clearance between the rear end and the frame rails. This is with the back end weighted down..
the easiest way to measure it is to put the rear end on jack stands and add an equal amount of weight to the frame (whatever you have laying around) that will be about the same as your rear bed...
i just had a friend stand on it and i measured where i needed to put the c-notches.
Good deal, it's important. Mine ended up looking VERY similar to create's. His measurement should be good, if you like I could measure this one also.
The thing about using pipe is that you dont get 'stress risers' created at the corners of where you bend the plate. Might be worth a trip to a steel supplier to be sure.

yeah, i think i bought 4 inch diameter pipe... and only about 5 inches or so of it, cut it in half and there you go, you have two pieces to use.
it was pretty cheap if i remember, something like 5-7 bucks.
I see the purpose of the C notch and have done it on other vehicles. What are you guys doing for clearance to the bed wood? Without the 1.5" rubber snubbers on my frame, my rear end housing is smacking the floor of the bed. With a C notch, my rear end would probably go through the wood.
