I have a 59 f100, I am looking to either rebuild the engine or do a swap. I was wondering if anyone has done a swap in a 57-60, and if so what they used. What engine/tranny ect, how hard was it. I am new into the classic truck thing. But I love the old trucks and I am addicted.
I put a 460 in my 58, no problems except header clearance around the steering box, just go through LMC or someone else like Dennis Carpenter for the motor mounts, they run around 100 bucks and they also have the trannie swap kit, small chevy, big chevy, small and big fords, whatever you want. I also backed my 460 with a c-6 and no problems there I made my own trannie cross member and it's worked fine, hope that helps man and good luck on your venture.
I also have done the 460/c6 engine tranny route and used a front engine crossmember as you can get from many of the parts suppliers. I also used a mustang 11 front end assembly.
if i was you, i would keep the 292 and rebuild it. parts are still readily available to rebuild it, and performance parts, though not as plentiful as a mor modern engine are still available.
plus you will not have to modify anything to make it fit, and hooped up with chrome accessories and stuff, those engines look really cool.
Thats what I was leaning towards. I'm not sure about the tranny. I love the 3 on the tree, but the top speed is low. I think that I can change out the rear end to get a little more speed, but I don't think it will be much. As it is now I am in 3rd at about 30mph, and top out at about 55-60. I have a looooooong way to go with the build. Probably alot more questions are going to follow this one.
I got a 59, with 292 waiting to start my rebuild, initially was going to try to install a 300 cid; but after alot of research and great folks here on the FTE site, I've decided to rebuild my 292 and keep the 4 spd trans. By the way mine doesn't run yet, so your a step or two ahead of me.lol
you probably have pretty steep gears in it right now (i would guess 3:73 or maye even 4:11).
switching to 3:00 or even 3:23 would probably make a huge difference and is a fairly easy swap. all 9" 3rd members are interchangeable (assuming you are using the same spline count, 28 or 31) and just about all ford cars and trucks up to about 83 (trucks for sure, not sure what year the cars stopped) used the 9" rear and most of them are 28 splines (same as your truck unless of course someone changed them). or even just swapping gears is fairly straight forward procedure.
you can also probably get an adapter to mate a modern 5 spd behind that 292 to get an overdrive if you wanted. a little more complicated than a gear swap, but doable and sooo cool.
couple more ideas for you to think about ( along with the thousand other ideas with any truck project)
