I'm looking to a cat back on my 2001 ranger xlt with 3.0. I'm looking at the magnaflow and the gibson systems. Which is a better system. the magnaflow is 100 bucks more. does anyone have these systems ad what do you think about them. I want a better sound from my ranger but more important than that is the gains. which system will give me better hp/torque gains and better gas mileage. i know i'm not gonna get a lot so i want the most i can get from this upgrade.
to be brutally honest, you not going to see alot of hp/tqu/or mpg out of a cat back alone. its a total package deal. you need to open up your air filte. port the air plenum to match the intake. then portmatch the lower intake and heads. port the valves + 3 angle valve job. then add some headers. high flow cats. (this is the biggest here you cats do their job well of cutting down pollution but they restrict the air flow more than any muffler ever could.) then a good set of cat backs. also you need a new prom for all the air adjustments you just made so the puter mixes the fuel to the correct ratio for the hp/torque curves. by this time you could have bought 2 new trucks. so basically in short with the cat back system alone you just buyin some thing that sounds nice. with minimal gains. and thats the honest truth.
Go to Midas or any other exhaust shop and have them weld in a glass-pack and you'll get a nice sound. Either that, and less expensive, have them weld in a piece of pipe. It'll probably sound the same. These small engines don't get unlawfully loud without a muffler. Various selections of exhaust systems aren't going to give you any noticable performance difference.
these are the two i'm looking at http://www.jusnesmodified.com/store/...roducts_id=346 or http://www.jusnesmodified.com/store/...roducts_id=180 i know i'm not gonna see great gains but i just paid off my truck and i'm not gonna buy another one. I just wanna put a few after market items on but not all at once after the exhaust i'm gonna put a new intake then probably buy a tuner from bama. who knows what i may decide to do in the future jsut some small gain items.
Ah there ya go. Well you live in San Diego I see, so no salty roads to deal with. So I'd say go with the Gibson. It's alumnized, but that's not a problem with your climate.
Yes, the gains are greatly inflated on the website (15-20 horses ain't gonna happen...period). The Gibson has a nice growl on the outside but isn't loud on the inside. If you want louder later, you can always just swap the muffler out for another.
My vote goes Gibson though, I think you'll be quite happy, plus a hundred extra in your pocket won't hurt!
The flowmaster 40 can be to loud and resonate in the cab, for best torque, you want a single in and single out, gibson also makes exhaust in SS, I run gibson on my ranger and had them before on other trucks, nice low rumble and decent growl at wot. The sound will make it feel like it has more power, but in reality it's hard to feel the few extra hp the cat makes. You need 10-20 hp increase in a ranger before you can really feel it on a butt dyno. At the same time, when it revs faster, engine feels smoother and it growls, those are difference you can feel and a cat can only help mpg, it sure won't hurt. How much a cat will help mpg varries between different applications and so on. Even Bob Ayres the mod hater has a gibson and he likes it, He's had it for a few years and it still looks like new, I pm him and have hime post some pitures.
A agree with Wendell on the Flowmasters! With the 3.0L and 4.0L V-6's, they make the most obnoxious "DROAN" sound you have ever heard! I also agree with Wendell, you will be happy with the Gibson cat back, I have had the Singe Side Stainless system for many years.
For a good in cab and out cab tone, Gibsons are a great match for Rangers, and they are dyno'd for each application so chances are you'll still get a small performance increase, not a big one because of the size of your engine, but it's a great match for these trucks.
I'll third the Flowmaster 40 series, had one before, loved the sound, but cruising at anything below 2K RPMs was just downright annoying...it just made the same tone over and over.
Punching a cutout in the tubing got rid of that by allowing some air to escape before the muffler.
Oddly enough, removing the muffler completely made it the loudest overall...but there's ZERO drone at cruise. Dun ask me why.
yeah i think i'm gonna go with the gibson. but now the question is do i go single side dual side or duals out the back. I like the single side i always like a stock look. do the other styles have a different tone or sound.

I can't answer your question, the Single Side is the only Gibson I have heard.
Single side is better for power, since that's what your concerned about. Not to mention it's probably cheaper. And in my opinion, duals out the back is getting realllllly old on trucks.
But no, the sound isn't much different unless they use really long tips on the rear duals.
