Single side is better for power, since that's what your concerned about. Not to mention it's probably cheaper. And in my opinion, duals out the back is getting realllllly old on trucks.
But no, the sound isn't much different unless they use really long tips on the rear duals.
Zach, have you actually heard a Gibson single or dual system? If you haven't,
I don't see how you can comment on the sound differences.
Duals can cause a decrease in lowend, and you have to remove your spare tire. I have the gibson daul sport, but I had it changed from exciting behind the rear tire, to exciting infront of the rear tire, "lighting style", it's a little louder this way, but it looks better and allows me to put my spare back in place. The system like Bob has would be perfect for your 3.0 and you won't have to mess with your spare.
I hadd the muffler shop cut off my stock muffler and tailpipe, and weld on a slightly used 40 series flowmaster and left off the tailpipe. It only cost me $60 installed and only took about 15 minutes to do. My truck is louder at higher rpms and at slower speeds but the sound fades away on the highway which i like so it doesn't bug me.

I have something similar. I had a 40 series Flowmaster for a year now and wanted it to get a little louder so I took it to the shop. They cut off my tail pipe and and dumped it down before the rear end. Sounds more beefy.
my next door neighbor had 99 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed with a 40 series fm single inlet dual outlet. (dual out the back) had the same fm sound all flowmasters sound like. he had 2 1/2" pipe from cat back with 3" tips that where 18" long. i would get picks and stuff. but it was totaled about 2 months ago now.

That's how mine was. I had dual tips out the back...didn't think it was loud enough. Well went to replace my shocks and one of the pipes was in the way, so I said to hell with it and cut both tailpipes off. Had the muffler shop bend a "U" shape pipe for me, I cut two turndowns and welded them on. Volume went up quite nicely, IMHO.
With no muffler (but still cats), it's no louder than the dumped Flowmaster 40 really. Does sound SO much better at idle though, but when you get on it it's obvious it's a six...
