OCA based on time
Thanks,
Dustin
1. I have bought 3 cars/trucks in the last few years that were really old "leftovers". I mean they were made in Sep-Oct, and I bought them the following Aug-Sep. Never has the dealer suggested that the original factory oil was too old and needed to be changed. And I have not read anything in any of the warranty books indicating that the warranty was voided if I did not change the oil immediately.
2. The 7.3 in my '03 X was made in July '02. The truck was made in Oct. '02. I bought the truck in Nov. '02. I change the oil for the first time in Dec. '03 with <1000 miles on it. I sent the oil to Oil Guard for analysis. The analysis essentially came back perfect. Oil Guard's comment (paraphrasing here) was "This oil is brand new, why did you change it?".
3. The GM Oil Life Monitoring System in my Buick and GTO have never gone off, even though I only change the oil once per year. GM says change when the light goes on, but at least once per year. When my GTO was 1 year old, it had 8000 miles. I changed the oil. The car now has 15k+, and will be 2 years old at Xmas. The light has not yet come on, but I will change it again at that time. (BTW - I have never had to add any oil.).
So, in conclusion, once per year is fine, considering that you are not putting any miles on the engine.
Now if once per year oil changes are keeping you up at night, change more often and get some sleep.
