i picked up some Xentx oil additive from target for only 3 bucks(retails for 16) but now i am hesitant to put it in with a new oil change. It says it lubricates the engine and improves gas mileage. Is this the kind of thing that will ruin my engine or reduce friciton and extend the life of my engine. Is there anyone out there who has used this or knows someone who has? I have a 97 xlt 4.6 with 102k

My very strong advice is Do Not Use Any Oil Additives.
The scientists on bobistheoilguy.com have lots of reasons about incompatibility with additives in the various brands of oil, etc. etc. but the bottom line is don't use additives.
Yes, just use a good oil and filter and change it according to the schedule.
I look at it like this, these people that formulate oils have to make it to meet a whole bunch of specs set out by the auto makers and sometimes the gov't (ZDDP reduction, light weight 5w20, etc). Not only that but they all have to be compatible with each other, in case you need a top up and can't find your brand, and be backwards compatible so you can use it in an old engine that used a lower grade oil, anything from SM back without a problem.
And these people have university degrees in tribology (the study of lubrication), and spent a number of years there learning it.
It's blended so all the additives work together in balance. Throwing in an additive is going to throw everthing out of balance and cause some ingredients to be rendered ineffective and others too effective.
They know more about all that than me, so I buy an oil that does all I want, and that's pretty much all of them.
