I have been running level 3 for about to weeks. It was cold last week and my truck cranked very slow, the lights dimmed just before the engine fired. My battery may need replacing. This caused my Evo to flicker and when it came back on it had reset all the settings to default, even the level back to 0. My instrument panel message center displayed "Engine Fail Safe Mode". Later the Check Engine light comes on. The truck would almost die under acceleration in 1st or 2nd gear, and vibrated terribly over 50 mph. I managed to get it to he dealership to find that my PCM has to be replaced. I just wanted others to know to watch out for this problem. I have had one other problem with my Evo when I updated to Ver 21. They had to send me another unit. I would strongly recommend the the Evo only be used to monitor the engine parameters, and not to tweak them. I plan on keeping mine, but no more tweaking!
Thanx for the info it confirms my suspciions on trying to tweak these engines and whether it is really worth the money and trouble. Will they replace your PCM on warranty????
So your saying if I buy it, don't use it to make my truck run better? Just use it to monitor what it's already doing? What's the point then?
Side note: How much did you pay for your Edge? I'm considering buying one (if I can use it to tweek my trucks performance cuz I, like many others, am not 100% satisfied with my stock performance out of my truck).
I've heard of others having problems when their battery was bad, but I think it was just with the display acting funny. Did you try to reload a program after that happened? I think I would of tried that first, tried to load a level and then followed it back with a return to stock program. Did you call the guys at Edge, they are usually very helpful, especially in a crisis situation such as yours is/was. I would check with Edge first, I wonder if you just needed the stock calibration reloaded (they can help you with that) or if the PCM was truly damaged?
Also, your in Boca Raton? How cold could it have been? Man, I miss Florida sometimes.
How much would it cost to buy and install the mounting hardware and gauges to monitor these 14 parameters of an engine. It also displays any codes. I think it is worth every penny even without the ability to tweak my engine. Personally, I tow, and I like to see all my temps. I'm just sharing my expensive lesson.
That was the first thing I tried. There was no Return to Stock option anymore, only levels 1-3. The unit had rest to level 0 and erased my stock program. I fought it for 2 hours loading, updating, and reloading, with no success.

Did you ever use the Lightning software to update your unit? If so, then a copy of your stock program should be on your computer. The guys at Edge can help you create the stock writer and reload the stock tune. Even if you didn't download the stock tune I think they could of helped you with it.

This is the first time I have heard of such a problem. There are MANY, MANY satisfied Edge customers here (including myself). Obviously it sucks to be in your position right now, but I don't think that this isolated incident should stop people from buying one.
I had a similar problem the other day I think. I was cleaning the inside of my truck and had the interior lights and radio on for hours. The truck seemed to start fine, but a couple hours later I went to start the unit, and the display was flickering kind of a silver color. I turned off the key and the unit had to rewrite the program. It has been find since then.

I have had my Evo in my truck for about a year now. I followed the instructions to the tee when installing it and havent had a problem. I updated it in April or so and havent since. I think that this is the best investment you can make as far as drivability with these trucks. It totally cured the sluggishness with my truck makes driving it more fun. I havent custom tuned it at all I run it on level 2 all the time. I have had it for 6000 trouble free miles. I would recomend it to anyone just follow the install instructions exactly as they read and you wont have any problems.
