I'd like to put a limited slip differential in my rear axle (10.25"). Actually, I'd like to do both but I don't want to tackle the front axle. Anyway, I can get a reasonably priced used factory (Sterling) limited slip on e-bay. What is the general opinion of the factory limited slip differentials (noisy, effective, maintenance, stay away from used, rough on tires)? What is the locking factor (25%, 40%, 75%)?
Any other recommended brands?
My purpose is not for off-road, at least not much. Just towing in Wisconsin wintery conditions.
You weren't bidding on one last night were you? I won one last night for $125. In my experience the factory unit is the most cost effective rather than buy aftermarket thought they may work better. if you buy a used one i would plan on putting new clutches in it maybe even tightening it up a bit. I would not put a limited slip in the front axle unless you only drive in the snow but even then i would have a hard time recommending that.
The factory unit makes no noise at all. if you keep the proper additves in the oil they will work seamlessly. no chatter no noise. I also haven't seen any wear the tires. and as far as buying used it fine the only thing that can wear out is the clutches and those are easy to replace. also bearings but thats not a big deal either.
We were looking at the same one. I was going to bid on it, but the guy did not respond to my questions (he had several days). He also has not had the greatest feed back in the last few weeks. So I didnt bid. Hopefully you have no problems with the transaction.
There's a brand new factory unit on ebay right now going for $310 shipped. I might do that and avoid the hassle of clutches and bearings.
yeah me and my lack of waiting I saw the bad feedback after i bid. He answered my question shortly after i asked. I hope I don't get the shaft! I will be documenting everything very well just incase.
I have a Zexel Torsen (=Torque Sensing) limited slip in an old 4x4 suburban and i just love it. No clutches, just gears in it, works fabulously on road/mild off road. Bought it from Reider Racing. I do not know if one is available for your rear, though. Detroit True Trac is supposed to be similar.
If I order new does it automatically come with the ABS ring? Or can I swap the ABS ring from my current diff? In my research I never see an ABS ring pictured on any of the posi's.
