Haven't posted for a while because old Big Red has been working so well... until tonight. After work I turned the key and it sounded like the starter turned but not engaged. I turned off the key and tried again and the same result. But I was third time lucky... started normally on the third try.
I stopped for gas on the way home. First time I turned the key, same problem... starter seemed to spin but didn't engage. Turned the key off and tried again and started well. Truck is parked in the driveway and I am wondering if I should be replacing the solenoid or looking for problems else where?
If you can hear the starter spinning, but not making contact with the flywheel it's most likely the starter. The device that kicks the little gear out can wear out resulting in the problem you have. If you were getting a solid click, then I would think solenoid or cables.
