Can I put a 4r100 in place of the 4r70w currently in my truck? 4.6l engine, 4wd.
Thanks.
It'll fit,but the EEC will not control the 4R100-you'll have to swap the EEC and trans harness out from a truck with a 4R100,along with the driveshaft at the least.

JL - Thanks for the info. Will the new PCM/EEC still run the 4.6 as a 4.6 or a 5.4 or will that make any difference?
A competent tuner can change the displacement value in the EEC program,so you can use a 5.4L/4R100 EEC. That will make load calculation right which will also keep the spark advance and shift/lockup schedules correct since those are partially based on load.
Any particular reason that you're looking at swapping in a 4R100?

I've got 104K on mine now, and it shudders/slips in OD, and when towing in 1-2 shifts (out of OD). My thinking was the 4r100 was a stronger trans and with our mountains in Alaska and my 6000 lb trailer (wet), it would be a better tow trans over the stock one. (The 4.6 has approx 260 hp - intake, exhaust) But the big reason: I can get a used unit with 37K miles for $300.

I tow a 30ft TT (6500 GVWR) with my '98 F150 4.6L/4R70W,and it's no problem at all. A good tune that locks the TCC and also speeds the lockup rate will make sure the fluid is cool enough to not cook the trans. The OEM calibrations for the 4R70W are terrible for towing, and are the demise of many, many of these tough little transmissions.
The 4R100 is a stronger trans, but be careful of it if it's a 2000-2001 model, there were some changes to a OWC at that time from the mechanical diode to a roller type. The mechanical diode type in the 4R100 has been very failure prone, and was the reason for a TSB to be issued to correct the problem. By the time you round up the trans for $300, get the EEC and harnesses that'll be needed, modify your driveshaft or the 4R100 driveshaft for fitament on the 8.8" in your F150, and buy the tuner or have the truck's EEC tuned for displacement...you could have bought a really strong 4R70W....possibly even cheaper than the 4R100 swap.

Good call... I'll check and verify that I don't have a fluid issue or something simple, and then a couple of trans shops to see if they can flash the EEC. I appreciate the great input! (She's actually a '00 Expedition.) Thanks..

You're not gonna find a trans shop that can flash what you need onto that EEC..it's gonna be a custom file, and there's only a few folks on the face of this little planet that know what needs to be done.
