Cats or no Cats?

i have a 97 F-150 xlt 4x4...and within the next few months i'm installing Super 40 Series Flowmasters. my buddy just got his cats cut out with the reg. 40 series. I was wondering what yall thought if it would be worth it, or how would it sound? the reg. 40 series is nice, but too loud for me. i enjoy the deeper tone.

Well, it's illegal for 1 and they flow pretty good as is. I have a 40 series with the cats and it sounds great, but isn't too loud. You will also lose some low end torque if you remove the cats.

I have a Super 40 on my '97 as well. It's too quiet for my tastes. Im hoping to gut the cats once I get time, and the chance to get a friend to help (weld it back on)

I would remove them, gut them, or get some high flo cats at least. They do not have very good flow if they are stock ones. After you have them removed you will notice a huge sound difference. Like lx man said though, in some places, it is illegal to not run cats.

Yeah you get way louder if you take of the cats or gut them and what not basically just personal preference do you want super loud or just right..

my buddie said he lost about 2 miles per gallon when he did it. do you think it would make a difference with 02 simulators? gas milage wise?

the reason he lost the milage is the computer goes into a default mode when the cats fail and they richen the fuel mixture to prevent emissions. this can be fixed with the o2 simulators. about $35 a piece online?? without the simulators, you will not only lose gas milage due to computer interaction, you will also have a constant MIL light on. Other engine operations could be affected as well.

I would keep them, or at the least put some magnaflow cats on. I think in the end we all should do our part for the environment. The stock cats flow pretty good, the manifolds on these trucks suck so there really is no advantage in removing them other than extra $ spent. Going to a 3 inch cat-back system will improve it a bit but no real seat-of-your-pants feel, nice sound though.
