Howdy folks! I'm new to this site but not to message boards and I hope I the same good luck that I had with corral.net. Anyway, I've got a 2000 f-150 4x4 with the 5.4 and it doesn't start. I drove it last weekend to the gas station and back and everything was fine. Two days later, I hopped in it and it doesn't start. It cranks fine but no start. My first thought was a blown fuse somewhere. All fuses are good to go. I then checked the schraeder valve on the fuel rail and there's no fuel there. I figured fuel should come shooting out of there but not a dribble. I cycled the truck to on but can't hear the pump. I figure the pump's got to be loud enough to hear but even under the truck with my roommate turning it on I can't hear it at all. I went back up to the fuse block and swapped what I think is the fuel pump relay with the pcm relay (same part number so it should be ok) and still nada. I also checked the fuel cutoff behind the passenger kick panel and it doesn't seem to be tripped.
I'm looking for more ideas because I sure don't want to drop that tank for the fuel pump to find out that its fine. Any input would be appreciated. Also, if anyone's got a chilton's or a haynes manual I'd be interested if there's another pump relay in the interior somewhere. Thanks in advance.
You could also check the fuel pump fuse under the hood. you said you tried the relay and the Inertia switch behind the passenger kick panel. I would hate to tell you this but if the fuse is good the pump might be dead. My families 92 Chebby Astro the fuel pump went out and it was the same symptoms that you are experiencing.
I agree with skilife17...the fuel pump is likely dead.
Have you checked the inertia switch to make sure it's not tripped? It's behind the passenger's side kick panel. There's a reset button on the top of it.
If that's ok you can try hitting (not too hard) the bottom of the fuel tank with something like a piece of wood while someone cycles the key. Sometimes that will get the fuel pump working if it has a bad spot in it. If that works you'll want to replace the pump before it leaves you stranded somewhere.
When you turn the key to the on position is there anything different? Do you hear the fuel pump charging? Are there any warning lights on the console? IE The theft light flashing?
Had that problem on my 2000 f150 so took it in to the shop and they replaced a computer?????
Think i got scr** $340.00
But it did start !! Well it would turn over good but the instrements would all
max out even the spedometer, found out on this forum that is is a week battery
so it would reset the electronic control module. (all gages would max out)
Replaced the 6 year Battery and no more problems.
Check the age of yours.
Go back to the Inertia switch by the passenger kick panel. Use a test light and check for voltage on both sides of the switch. You should have power on both sides during the 3 sec. fuel pump prime cycle when you first cycle the key on. If you have power to both sides, then everything is fine up to that point and the only other problem is either the harness at the pump, or the pump itself.
If you do end up doing a pump, it's easiest to take the bolts out that hold the bed to the frame. Disconnect the filler nozzle from the bed and remove any grounds and wiring harnesses in the rear for the lights. Lift the bed up and back along the frame about 2 feet(resting it atop the bumper and rear wheel). This gives easy access to the fuel tank without having to fight to get it down without a lift.....
