I've replaced all the rubber under the hood but the return lines, I plan on replacing the injectors and installing new hoses next month.
That may be a key to your white smoke as well. I've read that air in the fuel system can cause white smoke, and it is also pretty bad for the injection pump. Does it start right away, or do you have to crank on it a while? If you're also having a hard startng issue, that points to air in the fuel system as well

Sounds like you have the starter problem figured out. The tank capacity thing is more likely a sending unit/fuel pickup tube issue. If the tanks read empty at the guage, but only take 10 and 14 gallons to fill up, then it is a sending unit issue. If they run out of fuel at 10 and 14 gallons, you probably have cracks in the pickup tubes. Both are fairly common problems with these rigs.
I was just checking that if the fuel lines are gray, that means the lines are likely original?
Also when you replace the IP is it a good plan to put new injectors in also?

Reason: sorry I meant to put this as a post

After reading PLC7.3 post, I checked intake to my turbo and found oil in a puddle on bottom. Even though I cleaned the CDR a month ago, I am now concerned that it is defective although it looked real clean BEFORE I cleaned it. Thanks for that info. I don't need the headache of repairing the engine.

I have the same issue, original everything. Do the metal fuel lines have to be changed? I know that all the rubber has to be changed and there are kits to do this but what about the metal lines?
Will I have to do anything with the fuel switch, sending units or pickup tubes to run bio-diesel?
