My old '86 F250 4X4 with a 4 speed stick has lost 1st and 3rd gear. Truck has 165K on it and problem first started with trans slipping out of 1st unless you held the shifter. Since than it did it with 3rd and now you can't use 1st & 3rd at all. Does anyone have an idea about what could be wrong or should I just have it rebuilt and have a new clutch put in at the same time? Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give.

Flying outta gear is fairly common on the old 4 speeds. Bad part is, rebuilding it might not fix the problem unless you replace those two gears and their related shift collers. They get a tapered wear pattern on them that pulls them apart under load. Your shift forks are probably worn out also from holding the gears in. Their are other gear ratios in these 4 speeds as well if you get another box. My Dad's been through 3 of them over the years and they've all been a little different. Some have the first 3 gears close together with a big bite for 4th and some are more evenly spaced between them.
There's my 2 1/2 cents
Thanks Spectramac. Guess I will have to bite the bullet and have new gears and forks put in. I could also look for a junkyard one but that's taking a chance of finding out it's a bad one & have to go through the added labor. Do you know what a ball park cost would be to replace the gears and forks? Thanks again.
Bob
Depends a little on what kinda price you can find for the gears, etc. I know it would be real easy to get over $500 in it. Whatever the labor rate is at the shop will be the biggest factor.
When mine started making a very small noise in first and third, I had it torn down and replaced the counter shaft bushings. It cost more to drop and reinstall the tranny and transfer case than the repair did.
I would never drop the tranny without replacing the clutch.
Salvage yard prices on 4 speeds are dropping, everyone wants overdrive for better MPG with current fuel prices.
You may be better off getting a salvage yard tranny and rebuilding it before you install it if there is a lot torn up in the one you have now.
