Can't clear my ears!!

I woke up the other day with a feeling of my ears plugged and I can't get rid of it. I've tried working my jaw around but that only gives me very temporary relief. Any home remedies that you people know I can try?

Try plugging your nose and closing your mouth and (gently) trying to exhale. That has worked for me in the past. I also find that I can clear my ears by rubbing my finger against the back of the ear where it meets the skull.

Good luck!

They make this stuff you drip in your ears and it dissolves the wax. I assume it's some sort of very mild acid, but I'm not sure.

I don't have very good luck with it, end up feeling like I've got water in my ears for the next week, but it might be worth a shot. (Warm up the bottle before you use it if you're sensitive. )

Go to a doctor and get them flushed out, you will not believe how much junk comes out, it is really gross.

I think that stuff is just a light oil, not an acid.

The ear drop stuff that dissolves the wax has "carbamide peroxide" as an ingredient and it's the same stuff a doctor uses. I use the stuff as I have problems with excessive wax buildup in my ears.

Ha Ha! Thought you guys might get a kick out of this... I have "wax" on my list of words that prompt an email notification. Was I surprised to find you all weren't talking about detailing!

Chewing bubble gum can clear them out. Get some Hubba-Bubba or other 'large' bubble gum and chew on a couple of pieces. This has worked perfectly for me after airplane flights! If that doesn't work, get some Chinese Hot Mustard.

Prepare yourself because ear drums can really 'POP' when they clear out.

Try an extra hot shower. Stand with your head under the water until you can't stand the heat anymore, then jump up & down a few times. No, really! Try it. If your estation tube is clogged, (the tube from you ear to your throat) you'll never be able to clear your ears. Make sure that your sinuses are clear too.
Or try inhaling menthol vapors. Even strong peppermint gum helps.

2 things

A few years ago I had that problem and my local sawbones diagnosed me with "Swimmer's ear" He flushed them out as xrtford described above. I had to go back for re-flushing probably once every 6 months or so for at least three years. Then it just kind of cleared up. Haven't had any real trouble since then.

The other thing...

I've witnessed a candle type thing that you stick in a person's ear and burn, and it draws excess wax out. Anyone know more about those?

I thought my buddy was insane when he told me about this. But he did it and it worked.

Aparently when you hold a burning candle up to your ear the candle needs oxygen to stay burning and it sucks the oxygen out of your ear to stay lit, in the process taking out all the wax.

Please someone correct me if im wrong.

But im not sure why it would take the oxygen out if your ear and not the surrounding area.

I've read up on the "ear candling" thing. Everything I've read said it's a hoax.

Watch out for closing the mouth and exhaling. If there is material in your eustachian tubes it could go into your inner ear and cause problems. If you have an ear infection it could also cause problems. A doctor's office visit is your best bet.

Fill a hot water bottle..wrap it with a towel and lay your head on it in such a way so the back of your ear is right on it.
This will relax the muscles in your head to allow the ear to drain.

Another way is to use a nose bulb with some saline/salt solution.

This will clear the ear draining passages to your throat.

That is exactly what i had, one ear was plugged solid, it can really throw your equilibrium off. Trouble is i was in Mexico at the time and they (being a spa lady cause there was no doctor) used a syringe with hot water and blasted out the excessive wax build up. There was huge chunks of orange colored wax along with hair trimmings from previous haircuts that fell out of my ear canal. My wife saw this and had to leave to the nearest bathroom to upchuck her cookies. The lady at the spa asked if i use q-tips all the time, I guess you can really compact things in there if you are constantly trying to clean them....... lesson learned!
