The catch with the shafts is that they have a slip fit with a pin, that way in the event of a crash they will collapse instead of imprinting FORD on your forehead...

yeah i witnessed that on my 94 ranger- totalled it with a HUGE front end collison(off a bridge nose dive). After the wreck you couldn't fit your hand between the steering wheel and the dash
