custom fan shroud

Anyone seem a stock fan shroud for their 64? I am making one out of .040 aluminum right now and I am wondering if I am wasting my time or not. I have two upper brackets made along with the 4" tunnel. I started making it as a fan guard but thought better of it. At the least it will be a half radiator shroud to help pull the air through. I was thinking of making a full one but I would need to use one solid panel then rivet the tunnel on with L brackets. Any thoughts?

Mark, I think fan shrouds are more of a later idea. You shroud will only be benifiting when the truck is sitting and ideling. Because of the open front, air flows into the engine compartment very well.

You may be a highly skilled metal smith, but if not, finding one from a later model truck and fabbing the mount to the shroud could be an easier option.

My Taurus on the other hand has a very small frontal opening and relies on ducting. I replaced the top radiator hose on it this weekend and had to take half of the front end apart just to be able to access the hose clamp. Compare that to our trucks that you can reach in and change about anything.

I did the same thing for my '84 F150 with a 300. I just used ducting sheetmetal & rivited it together. I made a cardboard model first to test fit it, then cut the sheetmetal to size. Looks pretty redneck, but it works out all right.

i have made a few fan shrouds for my racecar. i've learned that the rivets will loosen up and the fan will hit the tunnel. i suggest using plastic for that part. i recently made a nice one from a single sheet of aluminum. i drew it out in AutoCAD first, then transfered it to the metal to cut out. i don't have a tunnel, it just tapers down to a tight fitting square around the fan. for maximum efficiency, the fan should sit half in the shroud and half out.

i measured the diameter of the fan, say 14"

i drew a square 16" x 16" with a 15" diameter circle in the middle to be cut out for the fan.

let's say the radiator measures 24" x 36"

the pieces coming off the top and bottom of the square will taper out to 36"

the pieces coming off the sides of the square will taper out to 24"

you will have to make several measurements to determine the lengths of the four sides.

for the length of the top piece, measure from the top of the radiator to to the center of the edge of the fan blade pointing up.

do the same for the bottom.

the tops of the side pieces will be the same length as the top piece and the bottoms of the side pieces will be the same length as the bottom piece

if you don't have a tig welder, draw on tabs you can fold over to rivet the sides together. you will also have to come up with a way to secure it to the radiator.

i will try to get a picture of my shroud so you can get a better idea of what i'm rambling about.

These are 2 pictures of what I have done so far. I am thinking I will take my fan shroud in to have it welded once I figure out the temp holding. Rivets will be good just to hold the shape until then. Funny thing is I was reading the measurements of some of the fans and I have a 7 blade 19 inch fan to pull air with. I have a larger opening then the fan to account for the engine rock at idle. I have a really lopey cam that rocks the whole truck at idle and didn't want to risk contacting the shroud. I still have a lot of cutting to do on the tunnel since I am trying to fill in a 3/4 inch gap at the top. Remember this started as a fan guard so that will still be the main purpose behind it.
